WHO YOU ARE
You are a special educator who specializes in working with students with disabilities, including students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, specific learning disabilities, and speech and language disabilities. You are ready to provide targeted, data-driven and responsive instruction to diverse learners. You prioritize building a trusting and caring classroom culture, where all learners feel seen, valued, and appreciated. You implement instructional and pedagogical strategies focused on moving students towards grade level proficiency. You are a reflective practitioner willing to go above and beyond to meet the needs of your students while educating the whole child. You are a relationship builder and a collaborator: you enjoy partnering with families, paraprofessionals, teaching assistants, related service providers, and other educators.

- Dedicated to working in communities that have historically been underserved and under-resourced
- Committed to thoughtfully engaging in identity work necessary to take a culturally responsive approach to pedagogy and relationship-building with students and colleagues
- Exceptional dedication and intentionality to achieve results and make growth in your own practice and in related student outcomes, particularly the outcomes of exceptional learners
- Ability to cultivate a positive classroom culture to promote safety and inclusion of all students
- Ability to use differentiated strategies to support students with emotional regulation
- Detail-oriented and highly organized
- Experience teaching students with disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders, required
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Classroom teaching experience required; 5 years strongly preferred
- Familiarity with PreK education standards, preferred
- Experience with ABA, preferred
- New York State Teaching Certification, strongly preferred
- Special Education Certification, strongly preferred
- Master’s Degree in Education, required
WHAT YOU’LL DO
In this unique role, you will work with the network and school team to solidify our approach to 12:1:1. This position will allow you to iterate and refine our instructional approach to meet the needs of students more significantly impacted by their disabilities. As a 12:1:1 Early Elementary Specialist, you will lead a classroom of students with disabilities to make exceptional gains. You will be expected to manage the following daily:
- Plan and deliver high-quality instruction aligned to students’ IEP goals and state standards. Elevate differentiation and universally-designed instruction to ensure all students meet rigorous academic standards
- Provide targeted small group instruction to students
- Utilize a range of instructional, management, and assessment strategies to meet the different needs of students
- Track, monitor, and respond to instructional data to foster student learning
- Maintain compliance for students in your class, including participating in IEP meetings, writing IEPs and progress monitoring, and communicating with families around student performance
- Use Responsive Classroom approach to cultivate a positive classroom culture including, but not limited to, morning meeting, teacher language, interactive modeling, and other related practices
- Adhere to schoolwide system to support students with emotional regulation, including de-escalation
- Collaborate daily with Teaching Assistants and Paraprofessionals in the classroom to support instruction and meet students’ individual needs
- Partner with Related Service Providers to implement and reinforce student supports
- Attend and actively participate in all meetings including PLCs, grade level meetings, and PD sessions
- Assist with non-instructional supervision of students, such as arrival/dismissal, hallway monitoring, substitute teaching, lunch and playground duty, or supervision of extracurricular activities
- Build team and community with paraprofessionals, teaching assistants, related service providers, and families to support students
- Engage in ongoing professional development, including significant training during the summer
- Actively engage in identity work and necessary conversations to dismantle white supremacy culture
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Explore Schools offers our staff a competitive salary and generous benefits package. Our salary scale for this role has been established using an equity lens and is based on relevant years of experience, education, and NYS certification.
- The salary range for this role is $90,000-105,000 for the 2026-2027 school year.
- There will also be additional compensation provided for attending optional, but highly encouraged, professional development in July or early August, prior to Explore School’s New Hire Preservice.
- We believe teachers get better and are able to deepen their impact over time. Our scale for this role is designed to honor this, and we do not cap years of experience for an incoming teacher. Increases are offered each year based on your tenure.

LOCATION PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Explore Schools is a network of 6 charter schools located in Canarsie, Crown Heights, and Flatbush communities of Brooklyn, NY. Our schools are currently operating fully in-person. For this position:
- In-person work is required.
- This is an exempt position and is not eligible for overtime.
- The standard work week is 45 hours, though at times you may work more. Exempt roles are not eligible for overtime. For non-exempt roles, employees are eligible for overtime for any work over 40 hours.
- This role requires that you be able to stand for at least 5 hours a day, take multiple trips up and down the stairs in a day, and move quickly in an emergency.
