Description:
The Unit Secretary is a member of the Mercy Medical Center healthcare team and performs clerical and receptionist duties under the direction and supervision of the Clinical Supervisor/Director. The Unit Secretary transcribes physician orders; performs order entry on the computer; schedules diagnostic tests and therapies for patients; assembles admission and discharge charts and maintains patient medical records; completes documentation for billing, answers telephone calls, provides routine approved information via telephone and in person and relays other calls and messages to appropriate staff. The Unit Secretary demonstrates professional behavior consistent with the Mission of MercyOne.
UNIT SECRETARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Function as a receptionist for the nursing unit by screening and routing incoming calls and visitors. Communicates routine information to patients and visitors.

Transcribe physician’s orders, perform computer activities, and maintain equipment in proper working order.

Maintain the cleanliness of the unit, ordering and stocking appropriate inventory of departmental supplies, setting up rooms for new patients, and other activities.

Demonstrate specific customer focused behaviors and promote customer satisfaction consistent with the Mercy Customer Service Standards.

Perform clerical duties including assembling charts, and compiling reports and records.

Promote and establish effective relationships within the department, with other departments, physicians, and with hospital guests and clients.

Take an active role in enhancing abilities to carry out job functions through professional/job related growth and development.

Provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support to the patient/family with respect to age specific and culturally sensitive needs as described in the department’s scope of service.

Meet core nursing competency requirements and unit-specific competencies upon hire and annually, as appropriate to job role.
NURSING ASSISTANT DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in the physical management of patient/resident.

Demonstrate ability to understand and follow directions.
-
Provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to the patient population with respect to age specific and culturally sensitive needs as described in the department’s scope of service.

Record and report information such as vital signs, intake and output, weight, and any behavioral changes to appropriate supervisory personnel.

Maintain, assemble, and organize equipment needed for a safe secure environment.
-
Assist in mealtime activities by delivering and removing patient trays and feeding patients.

Complete routine daily assignments.

Perform additional duties as requested such as transporting patients and obtaining medications, supplies, and medical records from other departments.

Demonstrate ability to impact change within your department and with other departments.

Demonstrate skills as an effective team member.

Meet core certified nursing assistant competency requirements and unit-specific competencies upon hire and annually, as appropriate to the practice area.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
The Unit Secretary is a high school graduate or equivalent. Previous clerical and computer experience is desired. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Certification in a 75-hour CNA certification program and a minimum of a high school education or GED equivalent is required for positions requiring certified nursing assistants. All Certified Nursing Assistants are encouraged to belong to the National Nursing Aide Registry. In certain areas, participation in the registry is required and the CNA must complete 12 hours of in-service per calendar year.
