Job Description

Manager, Offshore Structural Engineering

Position Overview:

As a Manager, Offshore Engineering, you will coordinate efforts in the offshore engineering team and across multiple projects, assisting with the technical design and evaluation of commercial and utility-scale offshore wind projects in development for the Invenergy’s target markets throughout the world, followed by technical supervision during project execution in the construction and commissioning phase

Responsibilities:

  • Foundation design

  • Manage the floating substructure engineering efforts across the organization for the offshore engineering team and offshore wind projects

  • Work in collaboration with the Offshore EYA & Siting Engineering Manager/Engineer and the Offshore G&G Engineering Manager on site layout optimization and preliminary assessment of initial foundation type suitability for the project site

  • Liaise and collaborate with the Offshore Fixed-Bottom Foundation Engineering Manager to find alternative solutions to optimize foundations and reduce project costs

  • Manage engineering consultants, designers and contractors specialized in floating foundation design for offshore projects

  • Optimize floating foundation sizing and structures in collaboration with consultants and manufacturers

  • Manage interfaces amongst designers, OEMs, manufacturers and contractors, to have an effective communication, including the coordination related to iterative loads (dynamic, cyclic, accidental, fatigue, metocean or any other), so the end product goes through a seamless coordination process

  • Lead and coordinate design efforts for mooring systems and anchored structures applied to floating foundations for offshore wind farms

  • Prepare and supervise technical documentation for requisitions and solicitations to be used with contractors and other third parties

  • Liaise with OEMs, technologists, and manufacturers, to use or adapt designs according to the best industry practices and most recent design trends and products

  • Specify the required parameters and inputs for the design of mooring systems, anchors and anchored structures to be collected during the offshore geophysical and geotechnical campaigns in collaboration with the Offshore G&G Engineering Manager

  • Identify construction and operational risks and their potential mitigations during the early design and engineering stage

  • Work and collaborate with the commercial and finance teams to provide necessary cost modeling inputs, and collaborate on cost optimization

  • Coordinate design according to the recommendations provided by the certified verification agent (CVA)

  • Optimize the floating foundation design for effective and efficient installation during offshore campaign

  • Coordinate work with other areas inside the organization as follows:

  • Turbine technology

  • Work with wind turbine Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) on foundation design and load inputs

  • Collaborate with the Offshore EYA & Siting Engineering Manager/Engineer to scale foundation loads for future project modeling, plus benchmarking with consultants

  • Procurement

  • Work with procurement team to determine best turbine options for each site

  • Provide technical documentation package for SOIs, RFPs, RFQs or any other

  • Established technical requirements in discussions with contractors and manufacturers

  • Evaluate contractors’ technical proposals

  • Ports and logistics:

  • Liaise with the logistics team to coordinate the required spaces and facilities to manufacture, pre-assemble and store equipment for the floating foundations onshore on a temporary basis during the construction phase of the project

  • Liaise with the same team to coordinate the logistics and other needs during the float-out and towing process of the floating foundations

  • Permitting

  • Collaborate with the permitting team to prepare the required documentation package to secure permits

  • Construction

  • Work with other groups in the organization to optimize site design before construction starts

  • Collaborate along project execution to clarify technical queries and other questions

  • Assist and participate during commissioning

  • Metocean conditions

  • Work in collaboration with the offshore engineering team and external specialists to align on necessary metocean inputs for floating foundation design

  • Engineering best practice

  • Develop in-house technical documentation for the offshore engineering team, including best practices, floating foundation design data, Owner’s requirements, amongst others

  • Create and update internal tools & templates for offshore floating foundation design and knowledge base

  • Explore new software needs as necessary

  • Attend relevant external training and workshops

  • Support internal trainings and workshops, as required by the company

  • Provide periodic reports to management as needed

  • Train and mentor other junior engineers as required

  • EPC&I contractors

  • Liaise with EPC contractors to understand design concerns and constraints, providing solutions to those

  • Coordinate periodic calls and meetings with contractors to organize work in the most efficient way

  • Coordination with contractors to understand best construction methodologies and installation processes for the selected floating foundations

  • Analyze risks proactively, providing solutions for those

  • Monitor project activities and progress from main office

  • Analyze progress reports to correct deviations and deficiencies

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, marine engineering or related technical discipline.

  • 10+ years of experience in the renewable energy industry, oil & gas or the offshore industry in general.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Ability to multi-task and manage deliverables for multiple projects at a time

  • Excellent verbal, writing, and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated interest in offshore renewable energy

  • Desire to work in a dynamic environment alongside people with multiple interests and backgrounds.

Preferred Skills:

  • 5+ experience in offshore wind engineering or offshore oil&gas industry

  • Experience in the use of international port/marine related standards such as ISPS, DNV, ABS, ASME, API, among others

  • Site experience in projects under construction
