Bureau of Fiscal Services Brisbane, CA (On Site) Intern


The Office of the Chief Data Officer (OCDO) at the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, U.S. Department of the Treasury, is seekingData Science Interns for Summer 2023, with potential extension through Fall 2023 and Spring 2024. Interns will be supervised by product teams at OCDO and will present their work for feedback at least once every two weeks. Please note that the internship is unpaid. We hope to have paid internships in future years. Duties Data science interns will be primarily responsible for working with an interdisciplinary team (of data analysts, product managers, and web developers) to develop analyses and visualizations that support public-facing websites operated by the Data Transparency division of OCDO: and

Examples of upcoming data science projects may include:

Joining federal spending data with Census data to analyze the impact of federal spending on communities across the United States; Researching potential new API endpoints to support software development activities such as enhancements to the popular Advanced Search feature on; Improving data visualization for open data datasets on; and Developing ways to connect Revenue, Spending, Deficit, and Debt totals to the public.


Conditions of Employment - Must be at least 18 years old. - Must be enrolled at least half-time at an accredited academic institution. - Must maintain status as a current student in good standings during your internship. - Must provide proof of education (transcripts) prior to the job offer; An official transcript will be required if you are selected. - Must successfully complete a background investigation. - If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the or are exempt from having to do so.

The ideal candidate has experience in designing and executing quantitative research projects that make use of Python or R, data visualizations, and SQL. Additionally, experience with API requests, statistical learning, regression, Google Analytics, and Census data is desirable.
