Overview: Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is seeking an Executive Vice President in the Public Affairs Department. The EVP is a crucial member of the leadership team and is responsible for driving the strategic narrative of PhRMA to further advocacy impact and deliver member value. As the head of the department, this EVP will lead a 25+-person team of talented, high-performing communications professionals encompassing media relations, executive communications, advocacy communications, social & digital media, polling & research, and employee communications.




The Executive Vice President's role will include:Strategic vision setting:Create a long-term, forward-looking communications strategy that aligns with and helps drive the overall organizational strategy. This strategy must incorporate both internal and external audiences, as well as digital integration and sophisticated use of data and analytics.Serve as a true organizational leader, demonstrating an understanding of PhRMA's underlying policy goals and providing input even beyond core communications-related competencies. Reinforce alignment with highly integrated programs, initiatives, and policy positions.Lead the communications strategy for all PhRMA initiatives, integrating messaging across all channels and creating momentum for the efforts through relevant and innovative outreach.

Organizational leadership:

Serve as a critical, sought-after leader and counsellor throughout the association.Create opportunities to demonstrate the value of communications in supporting organization-wide initiatives.Develop deep internal relationships, with a finger on the pulse of organizational priorities.

Reputation management:

Develop and lead best-in-class reputation management strategies, structures, plans and capabilities to identify and address relevant issues for the organization and to protect and enhance its reputation.Lead an effective issues management function that anticipates and effectively responds to issues and events that pose a threat to the organization's reputation and performance.Through solid strategic judgment and quick issues assessment, lead the PhRMA's position on minor to major reputational management issues. Closely collaborate with peers in Legal, Human Resources, Policy, Advocacy & Research.

Employee Engagement:

Build internal communications strategies and tools designed to reach a diverse workforce, enabling employees to be empowered, engaged ambassadors.Oversee, in close partnership with Human Resources colleagues, content for the intranet, employee newsletter, employee emails, and employee-targeted social media initiatives.

Team leadership:

Optimize the functional setup and leadership structure of the communications team, aligning with best practice and serving the interests of the organization.Attract, develop, motivate, and retain an outstanding, diverse, high-performing group of communications professionals through effective leadership, recruitment, training, development, and succession planning.Oversee the efforts of the in-house team that supports all brands and initiatives throughout the association. Ensure productive relationships with agencies, freelancers and other partners who contribute to the PR function.Through skills and needs assessments, create an environment that encourages creativity and collaboration.With a focus on talent management, build rewarding career paths for team professionals that result in high performance and loyalty.Key Success Factors PhRMA seeks an accomplished, proven, and constantly evolving communications professional, with deep advocacy and business acumen and a track record of aggressively and creatively positioning organizations. This person must be able to create large, ambitious ideas and plans, while also being hands-on in the execution of the work. Thinking on one's feet is necessary, and experience working within large, complex organizations, along with operating in a pressure-tested environment with a relentless pace will be crucial. Additionally, the ability to serve as an outside counsellor is critical; PhRMA plays a critical role in developing campaigns and programs for its members that often have significant communications components.The successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to partner with, counsel and influence an executive leadership team to drive strategic outcomes; the leadership experience to attract, retain and motivate a highly engaged and high-performing team; fluency with new and emerging communications models, strategies and techniques; and a track record of operating at consistently high standards in dynamic, global business and policy environments. Moreover, while this individual is not expected to be a policy or advocacy professional themselves, they must have a campaign-oriented mindset and ability to work in close coordination with policy and advocacy professionals, seamlessly integrating with and supporting that work. Ideally, this is someone with balanced insight on inside- and outside-the-beltway dynamics; business and political realities; the intersection of communications, marketing, policy, and advocacy; and a varied, diverse set of experience from which to pull. Healthcare exposure is strongly preferred, though pharmaceutical experience is not important.This EVP must also be an exceptional team leader and executive counsellor. As a team leader, they must have experience reinforcing existing strengths and building the bench of future leaders. Serving as a 'player-coach', and mindful of their own strengths, this person must demonstrate the team building expertise required to complement those existing strengths on the team, provide effective guidance, and allow the team to operate according to those strengths to allow themself the space to truly focus on the bigger picture, strategic imperatives. As an executive counsellor, this person must have the ability to work with, advise, and compromise with leaders, while also having the required backbone to own this space and operate as the go-to communications leader and functional expert.Professional Experience /
