Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Corning’s Glass Technologies segment manufactures glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (LCDs), organic light emitting diode displays (OLED) and strengthened cover glasses (Gorilla ™ Glass). The Melting Technology Development group is looking for an innovative research and development engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will bring a deep understanding of first principles electrical heating including impact and considerations for electrical frequency, current canceling and three phase heating and their application for glass melting, fining and delivery. The successful candidate will contribute to research and development of novel glass heating technologies and component design including the developing electrical models, design and prototyping power systems for single and three phase electrical boost glass melting systems and application of joule heating for the glass fining and conditioning. This candidate will use fundamental understanding of electrical systems for the mechanistic understanding of glass melting and glass delivery and its interaction with new glass compositions. The melting development electrical engineer will be responsible for the delivery of melting process fundamental understanding, new process technologies and capabilities supporting Corning Glass Technology (CGT).
Key deliverables are:
Development of enabling technologies which result in cost effective manufacturing and precious metal utilization.
Fundamental understanding of the direct heated resistive systems and the impact of electrical power distribution used for fining and conditioning glass.
Fundamental understanding and optimization of power distribution of electrical boost glass melting tanks. In this position, you will also have special access to confidential and other highly sensitive information. In accepting this position, you will be required to sign a non-compete agreement that extends for two (2) years after termination of your employment.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
Develop models and lead critical experiments to address the interaction of joule heating on process and equipment life, material limitations and power efficiency for glass delivery processes and its interaction with new glass compositions.
Support the design and implementation of component melting technologies.
Responsible for technology transfer to engineering and manufacturing.
Work in a multi-functional team environment including research, development, engineering, and manufacturing.
Present results and recommendations stake holders in research, development and engineering and other companies as required.
Travel Requirements (please note if international): Domestic and international travel maybe required: International travel primarily Japan, Korea, Taiwan Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 - 50 hours per week including teleconferences outside normal working hours
Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration): PhD in Electrical Engineering or MS in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of equivalent industrial experience.
