Position Summary


The Research and Development Ingredient and Data Specialist is instrumental in researching ingredients and materials to be used in the development of new products, with a slight emphasis on new botanical ingredients and extracts thereof. Database research, claims extraction, and literature review comprises the majority of the duties of this role. This position requires significant collaboration with other members of the research team to provide concept guidance on product development by using knowledge of nutritional requirements for athletes of all levels. It requires a passion for data and reading, as well as an analytical mind capable of finding and extracting numeric data and summarizing study results for a variety of audiences. The successful candidate will, timely and efficiently, turn data into information, information into insight, and insight into business decisions.




  • Actively search, identify, review, and provide feedback on available literature specific to new or existing ingredients

  • Conduct literature reviews and perform analyses on scientific literature and clinical research data to develop scientifically supportable positions and guidance on numerous ingredients

  • Read, interpret, and collect a vast database of scholarly studies and journal articles across numerous botanicals, extracts, dietary ingredients, and other substances

  • Maintain an up-to-date database (and knowledge base) regarding supplements, ingredients, and other substances across numerous fields of application, as well as claims associated with each

  • Design and conduct claims data extraction (results analysis) from these scholarly articles and source data

  • Interpret and extract claims from any articles or proposed product formulas that have been assigned

  • Evaluate the statistical relevance and scientific strength (correctness of methods) of a given study and/or clinical trial and provide critical feedback as to whether the results are supported and scientifically valid

  • Discover new ingredients and technologies that can be used in developing new dietary supplements for sports nutrition supported by relevant study results

  • Find studies or multiple studies across numerous ingredients and types and identify novel combinations and synergies between ingredients to drive innovation

  • Convert appropriate animal data and models to predictive and relevant human dosages using accepted standards

  • Use the collected array of data, extracted claims, and study results to advise the research and development staff on formulations, dosing, and appropriate finished-product claims

  • Explain findings to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences

  • Assist in formula development of new products and reformulation of existing products

  • Support other tasks, as needed

Job Requirements




  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Sports Nutrition, Chemistry, or a related discipline

  • Passion for reading with analytical thinking capabilities

  • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant experience (supplement industry, food industry, or pharmaceutical industry)

  • Computer skills (Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel)



  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills

  • Experience supporting clinical trials research

  • High level of initiative and creativity skills

  • Proficiency in mathematics and statistical analysis (biostatistics, etc.)

  • Passion for working out, living a healthy lifestyle, and use of supplements are a plus


Travel Requirement:

  • Attend seminars, conferences, clinical trials, trade shows, and events as required
