Clinical Medical Assistants have various duties depending on the size and specialty of the medical facility. Some common tasks include: taking medical histories, recording vital signs and assisting physicians during examinations. They are often relied upon to collect and prepare laboratory specimens, draw blood, take electrocardiograms, change dressings, assist with minor office surgeries and so much more. This course prepares you to enter positions as Clinical Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technicians, Phlebotomist, and EKG professionals. Students do not require previous medical experience to enroll. Students will graduate well prepared to pass multiple national exams, and enter the ‘in demand’ and growing Medical Field!
Medical Assistants and Patient Care Technicians can generally expect to earn between $25,000 - $37,000+ per year to start, depending on the certifications held and experience. No prior medical experience is needed!

- National Healthcareer Association's (NHA) Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT)

At completion of the course, a dedicated Lifetime Career Placement team is available to you to assist you with obtaining employment. An optional FREE externship is also available to graduates.
In addition to the course work and national certifications available, Merit is able to offer its graduates the opportunity to take their Merit training and in turn receive college credits towards their continuing education in the medical field.
Burlington County College has authorized us to offer the following:
Upon successful completion of Merit's Applied Clinical Medical Assistant with EHR/EMR program and passing a certification exam, graduates are eligible to be awarded 14 college credits towards their Health Sciences Associate of Applied Science degree. The degree requires 62 credits; therefore, Merit graduates with 14 credits already earned are starting with 20% of the degree work already completed. This is yet another example of our commitment to providing not just education, but opportunities to use that education to its fullest.
Medical Assisting/Patient Care Tech programs are an in demand occupation and training may be paid for with assistance from various government agencies. Merit Training Institute also accepts Visa, MasterCard & Discover Cards and has a loan program available. This program teaches to the secondary level, well prepares you to pass multiple national exams and enter the ‘in demand’, growing Medical Field!
This course will utilize lecture, computer and hands on learning/demonstration. Classroom’s overhead projector and computers computer will be utilized, along with dry erase boards. Medical office equipment including blood pressure monitors, an EKG machine, and laboratory supplies.
Main subjects covered include: Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy/Venipuncture and Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR). Students will learn how to take a patient’s blood pressure, vital signs, physical examinations, first aid, clinical procedures, urinalysis and perform CPR. Students will also learn how to perform EKG’s, draw blood, how to inject medications and diabetic testing. Areas of study include medicine, hematology, sterilization, disinfection, laboratory, microbiology, radiology, asepsis, diseases, arrhythmias, pharmacology, medication/drugs, and IV therapy.
The Medical Office component of the program covers personal medical records (PMR), record keeping, OSHA and HIPAA Regulations. Software covered includes Medisoft Billing Software and EHR Software. The course also covers medical terminology (prefixes, suffixes, body systems, abbreviations and root words), anatomy and physiology (A&P) through all body systems. Additionally, law, ethics, and privacy are covered.
