Job Description

Talascend is currently seeking a Director, Information Technology for a direct hire opportunity with our client located in Herndon, VA.

OVERVIEW:


The Director, Information Technology (Director) is a key enabler in the success of the Company's technology and business strategies.  The successful candidate leads multiple application development managers and their project teams responsible for delivery of Company service lines.  Additionally, the Director develops strong partnerships with business units to contribute to product direction and strategy, while developing a technical strategy to support the product roadmap.  The Director also ensures that solutions developed will meet functional, compliance and security requirements.  Furthermore, the Director also serves as a Company representative and liaison for industry initiatives, to include Student Information System providers, industry associations, key schools, education finance members, and other business partners. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Strategic Management:

  • Actively seeks opportunities to optimize financial costs/investments when making decisions that have a financial implication.
  • Creates new and innovative approaches to activities that enhance employee and company performance.
  • Takes risks in achieving a business advantage.
  • Actively looks for and uses external influences to make effective business decisions.
  • Contributes to guiding staff and other leaders on how they will fulfill the company mission and vision.

Workflow Management:

  • Performs research and analysis to assist the VP/CIO and Managing Director in establishing priorities and deploying appropriate technologies and solutions to meet changing business needs.
  • Develops a strong partnership for meeting business needs ensuring timely delivery of all product capabilities.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to project teams ensuring teams have the necessary direction and support to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Ensures management team is appropriately informed of project status and issues.
  • Defines and executes the strategy for company’s software development and delivery.
  • Prepares and manages resource allocation and budget plans for software development personnel, projects, and tools.

Workforce Management:

  • Develops a workforce plan that helps employees see their future careers with the company.
  • Evaluates staffing levels and department organization and optimizes the utilization and effectiveness of the IT organization.
  • Evaluates, hires, reassigns, and releases the software development staff and contractors.
  • Motivates, mentors and develops software development staff and contractors.
  • Prepares and presents personnel performance reviews for the application development group.
  • Rewards employees using formal and informal methods.
  • Applies corrective action as appropriate and resolves issues related to employee performance in a timely manner.
  • Adheres to all applicable federal and state employment laws.

Job Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional experience in the financial services, education, or other similar industry with broad technologies and functions in the Information Technology field including at the director level.
  • 5-7 years of experience in project budgeting, resource allocation, tracking, reporting and risk mitigation.
  • 5+ years of supervisory/managerial experience, and a strong business acumen.
  • Experience with budgeting.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills with the proven ability to successfully work across organizational boundaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Work with Agile development and practices.
    • Effectively, and often simultaneously, communicate and influence at both a detailed operational/technical and at a higher overview level.
    • Develop a technical design/strategy/roadmap the compliments the roadmaps for the lines of businesses that are being supported.
    • Conduct presentations to all levels staff including executives and board of directors. 
    • Identify and analyze service issues and provide resolution.
    • Think critically and strategically, and work with metrics to ground assumptions and hypotheses.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Live within a commutable distance of Herndon, VA.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Use of computer terminal and/or laptop computer. Use of a copy machine, and telephone.
  • Frequently required to sit for up to 7 hours per day in close proximity to others in an open office environment.
  • Occasionally required to use hands and fingers to operate, handle, and reach.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Must be flexible to do local, and out-of-town assignments and travel via car, train, and airplane when needed (5-10%).

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science or Engineering.  A combination of education and experience, including military service will also be considered.  Master’s degree preferred.
