Duties and Responsibilities
Research and acquire requisite information for producing technical illustrations.
Utilize customer source documents (e.g., released engineering drawings, documented photographs, data sheets, and 3D engineering models) to ensure all depictions are technically accurate.
Leverage, reuse or trace reference data (e.g., engineering drawings, photographs, data sheets, 3D engineering models, library files, and completed illustrations) to reduce illustration production time and control illustration production costs.
Reference appropriate industry standards, specifications, business rules, written instructions and verbal direction to ensure customer’s requirements are fulfilled.
Create 2D vector technical illustrations to simply convey complex concepts and procedures for electrical and mechanical parts, assemblies, devices, and systems.
Create 2D vector technical illustrations in isometric, orthographic, exploded, cross-section, and detail views/orientation for various technical manuals and documents according to industry and customer specifications.
Maintain a high level of production, quality, and focus under minimal supervision.
Quality check each technical illustration produced to ensure standards are maintained, callouts are accurate when compared to the associated technical writing, and all content is technically accurate per latest released engineering.
Communicate oral and written information concisely and accurately in a professional manner.
Liaise with technical writers to gain a better understanding of a project.
Interact with staff and customers to cultivate a positive team environment
Document and archive technical material to aid in future related projects.
Recommend improvements to production processes, procedures, and documentation.
Capable of reading, analyzing, and interpreting engineering drawings, industry specifications, and governing/policy documents.
Capable of proofreading and quality checking.
Grasp new concepts, processes, and procedures in a reasonable amount of time.
Capable of organizational, analytical, and problem resolution skills.
Maintain graphics database.
Work extended hours as required.
Focus fundamentally on customer.
Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
Observe all applicable laws, regulations and obligations.
Point of Progression
May be considered for a Technical Illustrator position if proficiency in all Junior Technical Illustrator skills and an aptitude for Technical Illustrator responsibilities has been successfully demonstrated.
Understand computer operations.
Aware of content management systems and automation tools for asset creation.
Aware of raster and vector file formats, file functions, and file export requirements.
Aware of the functions of 3D engineering models.
Understand the functions of computer illustration programs: IsoDraw, Tech Illustrator, Creo Illustrate, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, Corel Designer, and Photoshop.
Skilled in primary computer programs: MS Office and Windows OS.
Skilled in computer illustration programs: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop.
Aware of product specifications (e.g., ATA iSpec 2200 and S1000D).
Aware of various technical publications (e.g., AMM/MP, AIPC/IPD, CMM, FIM/TSM, and WDM).
Understand technical illustration concepts, practices, procedures and terminology.
Requires a two-year degree in a related discipline or trade school equivalency. Equivalent work experience creating technical publications and/or user manuals may be substituted in lieu of education.
