Job Description


System One is currently seeking an experienced Senior Plumbing & Fire Protection Engineer for a direct leadership role for our client in Central, NJ. 


  • Manage projects to include project schedules and coordination of project work
  • Perform “up-front" engineering design such as development of Basis of Design and Basis of Engineering narratives, preliminary code research and Conceptual Design
  • Prepare or direct preparation of plumbing and fire protection system layouts, detailed drawings, schematics, and specifications while exercising judgment in design application
  • Oversee, direct, mentor and train junior staff in proper design techniques and methodology
  • Review the work product of junior staff and perform final plan checking
  • Oversee and assist in the preparation of engineering deliverables and drawings including presentation materials, calculations, construction documents, specifications, design analysis and project completion records
  • Make recommendations as to the feasibility of certain systems or equipment, and evaluates products for their application
  • Attend preliminary job meetings with clients (owners and/or architects) to evaluate scope of work to be performed on proposed or assigned project(s)
  • Contact various public utility company personnel to coordinate appropriate utilities for a project
  • Check shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications
  • Respond to code comments and resolves permit issues with code officials
  • Assist in resolving construction conflicts and answers questions from contractors and bidders
  • Evaluate and specify plumbing products and their appropriate application on the assigned project
  • Provide in-field or on-site surveys and inspections and draft subsequent site report
  • Ensure the installation of the plumbing system meets the plans and specifications of the original design and the expectations of the client
  • Assist other engineers and designers within other engineering disciplines to successfully integrate multiple disciplines into assigned projects

Job Requirements


  • BS in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering
  • 15 plus years of relevant professional experience in plumbing and fire protection system design for all building types
  • CPD mandatory, PE License greatly preferred
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the National Plumbing Code, International Building Code, National Fuel Gas Code and NFPA 13 required
  • Experience leading and coordinating the efforts of a team of junior and mid-level engineers
  • Enthusiasm and desire to teach and mentor younger staff
  • Project management experience is a significant plus
  • Proposal writing and business development experience is a plus
  • Experience with AutoCAD MEP on similar projects is required
  • Revit experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of Hydrocalc or other fire modeling/design software preferred
  • Passion for sustainability
  • Knowledge of the LEED certification process (LEED Accreditation is a plus)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Professional Design Experience in a wide range of project types including:  education, office, high tech/R&D, mission critical/data centers, restaurant, laboratory/life sciences and healthcare
  • Creativity and a passion for problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Able to collaborate in a team setting
  • US Driver’s license is required
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access job site areas that are relevant to each client project
