Job Summary:

The incumbent oversees the preparation of financial statements and annual reports for external issuance and internal management reporting and leads the accounting for certain technical areas. The role is responsible to ensure compliance with accounting and reporting requirements of organizations such as the SEC, FASB and IASB. Manages technical accounting research, financial assurance reporting, covenant compliance with financing agreements, all benefit plan financial reporting matters, and other projects as assigned.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership, guidance, coaching, and process oversight for financial reporting and certain areas with corporate accounting, forecasting and budgeting areas of the corporate controller’s group
  • Provides broad strategic direction to individuals regarding their roles and responsibilities to help achieve overall Company objectives, along with the role the department has in fulfilling corporate goals
  • Empowers others to learn, grow into new responsibilities and make proper decisions to obtain the overall department objectives
  • Demonstrates the highest level of integrity and trust in all aspects of the job by working continually towards self-development, staying abreast of all current information and technology, and be knowledgeable with FASB & AICPA governing bodies affecting functional areas to increase innovation and ensure compliance
  • Promotes the corporate controller’s group by developing strong relationships between department members and other departments through a high degree of communication across management
  • Promotes the matrix organizational structure, including cross communication, and encourages cross involvement between people and groups
    General Areas
  • Coordinates the preparation of consolidated financial statements, reports and disclosures for external issuance, including annual and quarterly filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission
  • Interfaces with external auditors and legal counsel to ensure that communication of financial information to shareholders and lenders is in accordance with applicable rules, regulations and covenants
  • Reviews the impact of new accounting and reporting rules coordinates the implementation of these rules across the organization
  • Develops appropriate strategies, policies and procedures regarding accounting and reporting requirements, including pronouncements of the SEC, FASB, IASB and AICPA as well as those necessitated by changing business conditions and events
  • Maintains compliance with all financing agreements, including developing a sound working knowledge of the loan agreements’ provisions, inquiring of appropriate personnel as to the status of various covenants and insuring all the required filings to lenders are completed in a timely manner
  • Coordinates certain aspects of the company’s natural gas hedging program
  • Assists with the reporting and compliance aspects of the Natural Gas Acquisition Policy
  • Manages the use of the derivative reporting system to prepare all reports, analyses, journal entries, and documentation to ensure compliance with FASB derivative accounting rules
  • Oversees daily monitoring and management of broker margin deposit accountin

Coordinates the accounting for retirement benefits, deferred compensation and incentive plans, including share-based payments
Oversees the preparation of annual financial statements and disclosures of benefit plans, including coordinating the annual audit of these plans
Assists with annual and quarterly Financial Assurance filings with environmental agencies in Florida and Louisiana
Plans, coordinates and reviews work assignments, and conducts staff meetings as needed
Identifies training needs of subordinates and provides means to meet the needs including conducting formal employee training sessions


Successful incumbents will have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Accounting, CPA, and/or MBA
  • Ten to fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in accounting (including public accounting) with a minimum of eight or more years of supervisory experience
  • Must be computer literate within a windows environment and have an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Well-rounded knowledge of accounting pronouncements, financial management, business issues and ability to interpret and apply concepts
  • Ability to deal effectively with all levels of management in a deadline-oriented environment

Position Scope/Contribution:

This job is key in dealing with the burden of additional and increasingly complex accounting and financial reporting requirements. The position is responsible for the careful analysis of the alternatives available and effectively presenting the findings to management in order to select the best methods for changing business while maintaining current reporting requirements. Early recognition of accounting and reporting issues contributes to the company’s ability to analyze the situation and prepare an optimal response
