Journeyman Carpenter

Job Title: Journeyman Carpenter – High Level / Lead Carpenter
Department: General Carpentry

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 The purpose of this Operating Procedure is to specify the tasks and duties of an Journeyman carpenter at S R Freeman, Inc.
1.2 To ensure company expectations of the employee are defined and met.

2.0 REPORTING RELATONSHIPS
2.1 The Journeyman Carpenter reports directly to and is fully accountable to the Carpenter Foreman.
2.2 No position reports directly to the Journeyman Carpenter.

3.0 REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Must have an enthusiastic attitude and willingness to learn.
3.2 Prefer a high school education or equivalent.
3.3 Prefer six (6) years experience in construction work.
3.4 Must be physically capable of lifting lumber, framing and finishing work on the job site.
3.5 Required to have a basic compliment of tools as outlined by S. R. Freeman, Inc.
3.6 Must be able to accurately read and use a tape measure.
3.7 Must be able to use a level accurately.
3.8 Must be able to proficiently read and understand building plans.
3.9 Must have a valid California Driver’s license and have a reliable means of transportation.
3.10 Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
3.11 Must have excellent eyesight and depth perception.
3.12 Must be in sound physical condition and able to perform a physically demanding job. Body movements include walking, turning the head and torso, lifting, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, grasping, and flexing the arms, legs, wrists, hands and fingers. The sense of being able to see, hear and having full power of speech are required. Must be able to climb and balance.
3.13 Must speak English well enough to take instructions from supervisors and communicate with fellow employees. Must be able to read and write English well enough to read and follow instructions.

3.14 Must have the ability to lift, move and handle awkward lumber.
3.15 Must be able to work from heights above 6 feet using ladders and or scaffolding.
3.16 Must be capable of working and moving around elevated framing members.
3.17 Must be licensed to operate rough terrain forklifts.
3.18 At times required to travel on company supplied ground transportation to field assignments.

4.0 WORKING CONDITIONS
4.1 The job site is typically full of noise, and ear protection is encouraged. The job site is subject to extremes in heat and cold and the employee will have to take precautions according to those conditions. There will be exposure to dust, dirt, and the usual hazardous conditions associated with a construction site. There may be high levels of noise. Carpenters may be required to work and drive in somewhat hazardous conditions.

5.0 TASKS AND DUTIES
5.1 Completes work as assigned by Carpenter Foreman.
5.2 Uses and maintains equipment and hand tools both his own, and those assigned to the project.
5.3 Job site roll out and clean up.
5.4 Cut and handle raw lumber for use in framing.
5.5 Frame walls, lay subfloor, hang shear, and nail off shear and roofs proficiently.
5.6 Understands shear walls, including edge nailing, hold downs, and sill plate fastening.
5.7 Proficiently installs girders and floor joists, including hardware.
5.8 Able to roll joists, stack roofs, and pull basic layout for infill construction.
5.9 Thoroughly understands exterior siding, flashing, and window and door installation.
5.10 Shows proficiency with exterior trim, such as crown, soffit, corbels, etc.
5.11 Read plans proficiently, understands all shear schedules, details, cross sections, floor plans, and elevations.
5.12 Knows wall details and can productively assist in that phase of the project.
5.13 Responsible for most of the layout on a given project, including joist, wall, beam, and roof layouts.
5.14 Understands how structural steel items work in wood frame buildings: base plates, moment frames, steel shape and size awareness.
5.15 Able to handle advanced tasks requiring intense thought, including cutting complex roofs, complex stairs and intricate pick-up items.
5.16 Can accurately and efficiently plumb and line any wall frame
5.17 Can productively run one or two men on given assignments.
5.18 Able to run fascia, varge, and overhang cleanly and efficiently.
5.19 Understands the basics of roof theory: can cut and stack a simple gable roof, and simple hip roof with minimal assistance.

5.20 Follow journeyman’s instruction with minimal difficulty.
5.21 Safely and efficiently use all power tools, including skilsaws, sawzalls, beam saws, table saws, drills, impact wrenches, and nail guns.
5.22 Obeys all safety rules and regulations.
5.23 Obeys all company policies and procedures
5.24 Maintains a good working relationship with co-workers.
5.25 Performs any other duties and tasks as may be assigned time to time by the Carpenter Foreman.

5.7 Learn to read wall details: including King studs, trimmers, rough openings, stud heights etc.
5.8 Learn to safely use most power tools efficiently, including skilsaws, sawzalls, beam saws, table saws, drills, impact wrenches, and nailguns.
5.9 Obeys all safety rules and regulations.
5.10 Obeys all company policies and procedures
5.11 Maintains a good working relationship with co-workers.
5.12 Performs any other duties and tasks as may be assigned time to time by the Carpenter Foreman.
