Construction Accountant

Job Responsibilities of Construction Accountant

  1. Maintain the job cost accounting system, including chart of cost categories.
  2. Set-up jobs as required to track construction projects, including entering corresponding contract and budget information.
  3. Update contract budgets with change orders.
  4.  Process, review, and work with project managers to approve vendor/subcontractor invoices, ensuring accuracy of coding and adherence to established budgets.
  1. Monitor open construction payables to ensure timely approval and payment.
  2. Prepare construction draws, including compiling detailed supporting documentation for CFO approval, and reconciling to job cost system.
  3. Act as a liaison between the Development and Accounting departments.
  4. Communicate routinely with Project Managers on a variety of job-related topics, including initial budgets, costs to date, remaining budget, and project completion.
  5. Provide reporting and budgeting data as required by Senior Management.
  6. Ensure timely collection of W-9’s, master service agreements and insurance certification for subcontractors and vendors that do business with the construction department.
  7. Compile necessary documentation for annual construction insurance policy to third party auditor.
  8. Capitalize project assets timely and within GAAP guidelines, proactively coordinating with Project Managers.

We are looking for an Accounting Manager who combines a solid background in accounting and strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. You should be detail-oriented and have sound judgment and strong reasoning skills, as well as good analytic and problem-solving abilities. It is also important that you display excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Specific requirements for the Accounting Manager include:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting preferred. Minimum of 2 years of accounting coursework required.

  •  Minimum of 2 years accounting experience, including specific experience in construction accounting.

  •  Knowledge and application of basic accounting principles and functions (e.g. debits, credits, journal entries, asset capitalization and depreciation).

  • Solid understanding of accounting processes and procedures

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, with advanced working knowledge of Excel

  • Ability to work efficiently independently as well as part of a team
