Quality Engineer

SUMMARY OF POSITION:  The Quality Engineer will be responsible for understanding and applying Company, Customer and applicable ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requirements to develop and maintain a best in class quality programs, under the direction of the Quality Manager, including the ASME National Board and ISO 9001 certifications.  This role requires collaborating and working with several functions including Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Customers and Suppliers.  Responsibilities include improving performance of all aspects of the Quality System Basics, increasing lifecycles, reducing scrap, tracking and analyzing data, identifying improvement projects and communicate to teams. This position requires leadership and collaboration skills that would enable the QE to drive and manage major quality improvement projects for the organization. The Quality Engineer is responsible for achieving objectives while exhibiting Storm Industries Core Values.





Regular Functions include:


  • Support SMG Plant in assuring product quality, identify strengths and risks and provide feedback to plant operation team.


  • Responsible for first article approval process including oversight of receiving inspection daily activities, FA Inspection, NCMR’s, RMA’s and MRB process


  • Partner with and serve as liaison to establish ongoing communication with supply base, engineering, quality, and suppliers. 


  • Engage ESI (Early Supplier Involvement) for manufacturing input while identifying strengths and risks and provide feedback to engineering team.


  • Assess suppliers’ process capabilities to identify the intended control process or manufacturing plans.  Includes travel to supplier locations.


  • Manage the supplier corrective action report.  Ensure quality and delivery issues are addressed with suppliers by developing an effective corrective/preventive action plan.  


  • Work with suppliers to ensure measurement systems are adequate and capable.


  • Ensure any changes to raw material suppliers, manufacturing process, work center instructions, or measurement methods are made following required approval process after specific product family has been approved.


  • Establish, define, monitor and report on key performance measures (KPIs) with respect to suppliers’ performance.


  • Provide support for quality requirements to product engineering team, ensuring activities such as testing are completed.


  • Develop, document, and validate new quality processes and inspection methods.


  • Develop and implement Measuring Protocol (process defining usage of inspection fixtures and inspection tools including but not limited to, calipers, micrometers, thread gages, height gage, CMM, and comparator).


  • Respond to customer complaints when required.


Periodic Functions include:


  • Conduct periodic Quality System Management audits to ensure compliance with Storm Manufacturing Group’s requirements and expectations


  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.


Leadership Responsibilities:   


This role requires ability to act as Quality Manager and to lead teams.



Education and/or Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum 5 years in a quality position or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience working in a Manufacturing Environment.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

  • Exceptional attention to detail.



Professional/Technical Training and Skills include:

  • Identify and recommend tools and techniques to improve efficiency.

  • Basic understanding of measurement tools and math.

  • Project management skills.

  • Thorough understanding of GD&T with ability to read blueprints.

  • Six Sigma

  • Lean Manufacturing.

  • Working ability with Microsoft Office Suite and MRP software.

  • Understanding of best manufacturing/ measurement practices.

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of customer and regulatory requirements.

  • Standard knowledge of a Quality Management System (ISO 9001 preferred).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality system tools, to include, FMEA, DFSS, Process Capability, Measurement System Analysis, SPC, Control Plans, Pareto and effective Root Cause Analysis.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality system tool PPAP an asset.

  • Ability to communicate in Mandarin an asset.

  • ASQ certification an asset.
