POSITION SUMMARY: This position provides assistance to physicians, RNs, members of the interdisciplinary team in a medical assistant capacity.  Under the supervision of an RN, performs assigned clinical tasks to pediatric patients with orthopedic, burn, reconstructive plastic and rehabilitation conditions. 

  • Obtains accurate vital signs, including heights, weight blood pressure and other measurements per clinic standards.  Recognize variance from normal, report variances outside of normal ranges to the RN.
  • Documents obtained information in the SCHIS medical record accurately and timely.
  • Prepares and places patient in the appropriate position needed for the examinations/procedure.
  • Obtains previous ancillary and diagnostic test results that may be needed for the examination/procedure. Sets up needed equipment or supplies.
  • Assist with examination/procedure dressing change.  Maintains sterile technique.
  • Observes and reports unusual symptoms, changes, accidents, and injuries to the supervising RN.
  • Reviews patient plan of care with the supervising RN and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Monitors patient waiting time in exam rooms and waiting areas.  Informs patients/families every 15-20 minute of reasons for extended delays.
  • Monitors utilization of medical/patient care supplies and coordinate ordering of supplies as needed.
  • Maintains clean exam rooms and stocks rooms with supplies, instruments, equipment, and linen.
  • Communicates clearly with patient/family to obtain accurate information in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in working hours in order to meet patient care requirements.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Knowledge of:

·                     Medical terminology.

·                     Microsoft office including, word, excel, outlook, etc.

 

Ability to:

·                     Demonstrate effective written and oral communication and verbal skills to effectively communicate with patients, visitors, and staff.

·                     Demonstrate Organizational skills

·                     Work quickly and accurately under pressure.

·                     Organize high volume workload.

·                     Accurately prioritize workload.

·                     Work with diverse personnel, both faculty and staff.

 

Education:

  • High school Diploma or GED certification required.

  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program required.

  • State Certification as CMA (Certified Medical Assistant)

 Experience:

  • Pediatric, orthopedic, burn, or rehabilitation medical assistant experience preferred.

  • Ability to take and document vital signs (in metric) and follow simple instructions from Providers and licensed nurses. 

  • Developmental stages infant through adolescent

  • Standard precautions of infection control

  • Carry out specific oral and written assignments

  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form

  • Interact effectively and sensitively with children of different age levels and cultural backgrounds and with their families

  • Adapt to a changing patient care environment.

  • Participate in US Based outreach clinics as necessary and as assigned

  • Ability to perform other duties as assigned

     

Certification and Licensure:

  • Current  (CCMA) California Certifying board of Medical Assistants

  • Current BLS certification required.

  • State Certification as CMA (Certified Medical Assistant)

 

Language Skills:

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish strongly preferred.
