Job Description


SUMMARY Research, develop and document manufacturing process specifications using proven manufacturing engineering techniques for the purpose of manufacturing quality products at the most economical cost in a metal working environment. Develop operational improvements and implement Lean Manufacturing concepts on the plant floor. The Manufacturing Engineer must also be able to effectively and professionally interact with any and all levels of the organization.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned.


In each of the duties listed below the employee is expected to perform to the highest standards of quality, to strive for maximum customer satisfaction, and to continually look for ways to improve the methods, practices and procedures of this position:


Develop and document effective processes for manufacturing new and existing parts.


Utilizes Lean Manufacturing principles to reduce waste and improve performance.


Utilizes Project Management tools/principles to facilitate M.E. projects.


Participates during the procurement, installation and acceptance of equipment, fixtures, dies, etc. as well as cutting tools.


Participates with Capital Expense Requests (CER’s) and purchase orders.


Participates with maintenance activities to improve equipment operation.


Participates with the tool program (cutting/fixtures) to maintain effective processes.


Develop and implement cost reduction ideas to improve processes. 


Assists intra-departmental personnel by evaluating/resolving manufacturing issues, including working with staff on mistake-proofing solutions to help eliminate/reduce the number of operator related errors.


Develops and maintains plant/cell layout (AutoCAD).


Generate new and/or modify part processes/programs for CNC equipment, where applicable.


Train operations personnel on process methods and equipment operations.


Develops accurate labor/material estimates (Excel) as required.


Develops labor standards using defined Industrial Engineering methods and in accordance with the labor contract, where applicable.


Maintains SAP data files as required to document process methods to the latest EC.


Reviews and analyzes effects of EC's on operations and initiates appropriate action.


Generates or assists requests for EC's and deviations as required.


Participate in the operation of TS-16949 (ISO 9000) and ISO 14001 systems

Assists Applications Engineering, Quality, Sales, Marketing, Operations and R&D personnel during the development and refinement of products (design & manufacturability).


Other duties consistent with facility objectives and the M.E. position.


Miscellaneous (Non-Supervisory)


Acts as a good steward of the Company’s resources and exemplifies the values of the Company.


Ensures personal compliance with all Company policies, procedures, values, ethics, and rules.


Maintains and promotes a safe work environment through ownership of Company safety program.  This includes following all safety rules/regulations and proper operating procedures, as well as the proper use of prescribed safety equipment pertinent to the department, and immediately reporting all accidents/incidents to supervisor.


Supports the Company’s equal employment opportunity and affirmative action policy and actions, immediately reporting violations to supervisor and/or the Human Resources representative.


Ensures that work area is free from any form of harassment (sexual, racial, religious, etc.), immediately reporting violations to supervisor and/or the Human Resources representative.


Supports Company’s quality and environmental policies and programs and meets quality requirements specified for position.  Meets quality requirements specified by production drawings, bills of materials, control plans, policies, work instructions, and procedures.


Actively participates in and successfully completes appropriate training.  As appropriate, submits documentation of specific training to support successful completion (i.e. course description, certificate; Training Completed/Evaluation Form).


Meets with supervisor at least once per year to review job performance using this job description as a basis for appraisal. 


Maintains complete security and confidentiality of all Company records and employee data.


Maintains a clean, orderly and professional work environment.


Performs other miscellaneous duties as may be assigned.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES No direct supervision is required of this position.

Job Requirements


QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in MFGE/BSIE/BSME/MFT/BSE or equivalent from an accredited institution.  May also possess relevant “Professional Certifications” (SME – CmfgE, Lean Mfg; IASSC - Six Sigma, Green or Black Belt; PMI – PMP, PgMP; Journeyman’s Card, etc.).  5 years progressive manufacturing engineering experience (Manual and CNC machining, heat treat, assembly, fabrication, welding, material handling, finishing) in a ferrous metal working environment (forgings, castings, bar, plate, sheet, etc.) OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.




OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Project management experience in a metal working environment; Continuous Improvement, Lean Manufacturing, Facilities and Safety & Ergonomics experience in a metal working environment; Good problem solving (8D, 5 Why, A3, etc.) and communication skills (written and verbal, CAD drawing); Functional with TS-16949 and/or ISO 9000 and ISO 14001; Able to utilize Microsoft (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Project, and Visio) and AutoCAD (SolidWorks and CAM experience beneficial); Able to utilize a variety of standardized industrial specifications to complete tasks assigned (ASTM, ANSI, MIOSHA, ISO, DIN, ASM, etc.); Able to work on cross functional teams to improve business and/or operational conditions in a metal working environment




LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and/or government regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedural instructions.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.


COMPUTER SKILLS  Ability to use a personal computer, proficiency of Microsoft suite of products including Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Excel and Project.  Familiarity with CAD/CAM software helpful.


REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
