Registered Nurse - Observation Unit

The Registered Nurse must meet the following qualifications:

  • Education: BSN or MSN or enrollment in an RN-BSN or RN-MSN program within 1 year of hire and completion within 5 years of hire
  • Licensure/Certification: California RN licensure, American Heart Association BLS, and NIH Stroke Certificate (required); Certified in specialty practice area (preferred)
  • Experience: Experience in the area of specialty or in area of higher acuity or participation in internship program/course (preferred)

The Registered Nurse's responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrating compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and taking action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and reporting suspected violations
  • Assessing, utilizing age specific data, the patient’s physical, psychosocial, and spiritual status in a comprehensive manner.

  • Demonstrating accurate assessment skills, appropriate to the age of the patient, based on scientific facts and principles.

  • Performing initial assessment and completing required documentation within organizational standards.

  • Performing and documenting ongoing assessments including observation, physical examination, laboratory/test results, and patient response to procedural intervention.

  • Participating in the identification and clarification of patient needs, as evidenced by participation in multidisciplinary care planning, to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

  • Reviewing and revising plan of care according to change in patient’s status.

  • Completing patient classification for assigned patients as required.

  • Implementing plan of care according to identified physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.

  • Implementing and utilizing the Relationship-Based Care Professional Practice Model as the guide to all interactions between patients, families, co-workers, staff, physicians, and self.

  • Completing patient care assignments in compliance with established hospital policies and procedures of clinical area.

  • Prioritizing nursing interventions commensurate with patient’s needs.

  • Utilizing effective verbal and written communication skills through the presentation of pertinent information using the SBAR format as appropriate.

  • Assisting other staff in the delivery of patient care, as appropriate.

  • Incorporating patient teaching/discharge planning to promote optimal patient outcomes.

  • Providing, evaluating retention of, and documenting education to the patient/family/significant other according to organizational standards.

  • Coordinating and documenting appropriate discharge planning and referrals to ensure continuity of care after discharge.

  • Recognizing, accepting responsibility for, and maintaining commitment to professional development and clinical competency.

  • Attending required professional development sessions and staff meetings. If unable to attend, reviewing minutes or discussing proceedings of meetings with peers or managers.

  • Identifying personal knowledge deficits and seeking resources/consultation to ensure safe patient care.

  • Utilizing all channels of communication including reading organizational email at least once a week, to obtain knowledge, transmit information, address concerns, and solve problems.

  • Embracing change and continuously identifying opportunities for improvement by demonstrating a commitment to utilizing evidence based practice.

  • Articulating knowledge and actively participating in nursing practice quality initiatives.

  • Incorporating performance improvement recommendations into daily practice.

  • Accepting accountability and participating in problem-solving issues related to quality patient care outcomes.

  • Sharing knowledge and acting as a professional resource to other members of the health care team.

  • Supporting and participating in Unit Based Council initiatives.

  • Contributing to professional growth of peers by providing feedback through peer coaching and evaluation.

  • Striving to be a life-long learner continuing to enroll and completing classes and courses to advance and increase new clinical knowledge.

  • Complying with divisional and unit specific matrices.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.
