School Crossing Guard Supervisor

In accordance with the Merit System Rules and Regulations, an eligible list, which will be valid for a one-year period and which will be used to fill vacancies during that period, is being established for this classification.  Applicants on the eligible list will be certified in accordance with the Merit System and appropriate union contracts.

EXAMINATION PROCESS: The examination process for this posting may include an evaluation of training and experience, a written examination, a computerized exam, an oral board interview examination, a performance examination or any combination of the above in order to qualify applicants for placement on the eligible list.  The eligible list will be used to fill vacancies that occur within the next year.  The appropriate number of names on the eligible list as prescribed by Merit System Section 26.03.505 will be certified to the hiring department for consideration to fill the vacant position(s).

New employees are generally hired at the starting salary and may be eligible for merit increases each year upon receipt of a satisfactory performance evaluation, up to the maximum salary.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Plans, oversees, and supervises the work of School Crossing Guards; does related work as required. 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  An employee in this class performs work involving the responsibility for seeing that School Crossing Guards perform their duties according to prescribed standards.  The work is performed under general supervision and includes early morning shifts. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  (Illustrative only)

 

  • Supervises, plans, and reviews the work of School Crossing Guards;
  • Conducts the interview and hiring processes for School Crossing Guard applicants;
  • Evaluates the performance of School Crossing Guards and makes recommendations for appropriate disciplinary action;
  • Interacts with Union representatives to ensure an effective and efficient working atmosphere;
  • Makes daily inspection of School Crossing Guard activities at each school;
  • Issues School Crossing Guard uniforms;
  • Substitutes for absent School Crossing Guards;
  • Maintains time, mileage, and payroll records;
  • Oversees the custody and issuance of school patrol equipment;
  • Promotes safety in the schools;
  • Keeps records and makes reports of School Crossing Guard activities;
  • Trains School Crossing Guards;
  • Promotes an ongoing attitude of dedication to excellent public service and ensures that external and internal customers are provided with the highest quality of service;
  • Operates a personal computer and other related equipment in the course of the work.



 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of office terminology and procedures; some knowledge of elementary bookkeeping; good knowledge of traffic regulations and of school safety practices; ability and willingness to work in inclement weather throughout the year; ability to work with children; ability to supervise others; mental alertness and ability to react quickly and properly in an emergency; tact and courtesy; ability to communicate courteously and effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to work with representatives from various school districts, DelDOT and other agencies to develop assignments and safety strategies at each assigned post; ability to learn specialized data processing programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  At least one (1) year law enforcement experience or at least one (1) calendar year working as a School Crossing Guard and possession of a high school diploma or GED certificate; or an equivalent combination of education, experience or training directly related to the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must pass a Class III County physical examination and a background check.
