Job Description

Job Title: Sheet Metal Layout and Fabricator 

Reports to: Sheet Metal Shop Supervisor

Summary/Objective:

The Sheet Metal Layout and Fabricator is responsible for precision prototype projects, typical tolerances for layout, forming, and fabricating.

Essential Functions:

  • Sets up and operates a wide variety of sheet metal working machine tools such as: punch presses, power and hand rollers, power and hand brakes, lasers, power notchers, hand notchers, shears, drill presses, riveters, related hand operated equipment, NC/CNC/MDI Machines, and other similar sheet metal working machine or hand tools
  • Sets up parts in equipment using appropriate tools and devices for forming, bending, blanking, rolling, extruding, drawing and similar operations
  • Reads and works to the indicated accuracy, specifications and tolerances as detailed on engineering drawings, machine assembly prints, machine construction prints, blueprints, sketches, equipment manuals and vendor diagrams
  • Performs and makes complex layouts using triangulations, radial and parallel line development, using calculations, squares, sine bars, tapes, height gages, rules, centers, dividers, punches, trammels, compasses, and other similar tools required for the construction of complex layouts for a wide variety of types and grades of material
  • Applies principles of welding and welding processes, to insure that the correct fabrication techniques are used on welded assemblies and weldments
  • Performs assembly operations of fabricated parts and equipment, using bolt, screws, sheet metal screws, fasteners, rivets, and a wide variety of hand and power equipment required to complete the assembly operation
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility: No

The work environment and physical demands required would be representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, and may include, but are not limited to the following:

Work Environment:

  • May work in varying temperatures; both inside and outside, including inclement weather, heat, humidity, cold, and dampness
  • May work in areas with exposure to moderate/high noise levels
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including dust
  • May be required to work in confined spaces or from high heights

Physical Demands:

  • This role routinely uses construction equipment such as heavy machinery, hand and power tools
  • While performing duties of the job the employee may work aloft, climb, bend, pull, reach overhead, stand/walk for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms
  • Must be able to correctly identify all colors of a color-coded cable/wires and see close vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus

Travel:

  • May require travel (typically not overnight)

Job Requirements

Required:

  • 3-5 years of experience with sheet metal layout and fabrication; or equivalent combination of vocational training and experience
  • Ability to work with both U.S. customary and IS (metric) systems of measurement
  • Aptitude to perform mathematical calculations including trigonometry to determine dimensions, locations, angles, sizes and shapes, layout and tonnage requirements. - Work from both written and verbal instructions
  • Experience with different types and grades of sheet metal, plate, bar and rod stocks with different tolerances and specifications
  • Must be able to multi-task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, show attention to detail, and demonstrate problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to pass post-offer pre-employment drug screen, and may be required to satisfactorily complete additional background checks as required (i.e. DMV, criminal history)
  • Must adhere to all company policy and procedures
  • Must be available to work assigned schedules and extended hours as needed including day, evening, weekend, and holiday hours

Preferred:

  • An apprenticeship certification or two-year technical degree in a Fabrication and Layout Program
  • Auto-CAD and Vulcan experience
  • Experience in MIG and TIG
  • Ability to operate forklift
  • Prior military experience 
  • HS diploma or GED equivalent
