Job Summary/Objective:

 The Phlebotomist position is responsible for performing venipuncture and skin punctures competently and expediently and attends patients by finding the best technique for retrieving specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing; and performing screening procedures.


Essential Functions:

·         Perform blood draws competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.

·         Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks complying with legal regulations.

·         Follow Laboratory policy and procedures. Observe strict safety protocols to avoid direct contact with the blood and ensure that all equipment is properly sanitized before it is used to collect blood.

·         Verifies patient by reading patient identification.

·         Keep the work area clean.

·         Clean and supply venipuncture trays.

·         Label and record all test tubes, log procedures and file paperwork.

·         Demonstrate knowledge of color top tube to use, volume of blood needed and test requirements

·         Dispose all sharp instruments in a rigid sharp container.

·         Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and observing times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.

·         Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures.

·         Display courteous, professional manner towards patients, co-workers, nursing and medical staff.

·         Call patients to remind them about their laboratory appointments and provide them with the appropriate instructions.

·         Reschedule appointments for the No Show Patients.

·         Complete pending task on a daily basis.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

·         Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

·         Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred

·         Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred

      Required Language:  

  •        Bilingual (English and Creole)  

Preferred Education and Experience:

·         Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred.

·         Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred

·         Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred

·         Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred


Professional Requirements:

·         Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean

·         Complete annual education requirements

·         Maintain patient confidentiality at all times

·         Wear identification while on duty

·         Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations

·         Comply with all organizational policies and standards regarding ethical business practices

·         Attend regular staff meetings and in-services.


Supervisory Responsibility:


This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment:


This profession operates in a laboratory. Phlebotomists are exposed to blood and body fluids, and chemicals. This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses.


Physical Demands:


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, bending, kneeling, and stooping all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Pushing and pulling heavy objects. Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients. Position requires light to moderate work with 50 pounds’ maximum weight to lift and carry.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full time position in a healthcare facility which is open from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.




Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area travel may be expected. He/she will be required to work at any facility.
