Construction Estimator Job Description
  • Review plans for a potential project.  Plans may be complete or very conceptual.
  • Verify plans with existing site conditions.
  • Determine which building trades will be required to complete the project.
  • Accurately determine and list the scope of work for each trade required to complete the project.
  • Prepare invitations to bid to selected subcontractors to provide a bid for the project.
  • Order copies and distribute plans for bid.
  • Review plans and specifications for completeness, inconsistencies, and conflicts.
  • Prepare Requests For Information as required to the engineers to obtain the greatest clarity of the details of the project.
  • Disseminate any additional clarifications to the affected subcontractors.
  • Prepare an estimate of quantities and a list of items to compare to subcontractor proposals to assure the proposals are qualified.
  • Insure that subcontractors submit bids on, or prior to, the requested date and time.
  • Evaluate subcontractor proposals for consistency with the plans and specifications.
  • Prepare a project budget worksheet.
  • Prepare a comprehensive proposal of services containing inclusions, exclusions, clarifications and alternates.
  • Upon award of the project, prepare scopes of work for all subcontractors to be issued a contract.  
  • Review of project material submittals.
  • Process cost estimates during the course of the project for requested changes and additional work.

Job Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years experience in estimating commercial and tenant improvements projects.
  • Requires a strong attention to detail.
  • Must be well organized, take initiative, able to multi-task and work well under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills required, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent blueprint reading skills required.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project.
  • Team Player.
  • College degree in Business, Architecture, Construction Management or other related discipline preferred.
