Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and within the scope of their practice, the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) provides patient care and performs appropriate segments of the prescribed medical regime for an assigned group of patients and effectively interacts within patients, significant others, and other health care team workers while maintaining standards of care.

Demonstrates knowledge of age-related needs of the patient, provides patient care based on these needs as evidenced by but not limited to:
- Provides direct patient care to meet patient’s needs
- Reports changes in patient's condition to Registered Nurse and follows-up
- Conducts a procedure summary by reporting to relief staff member
- Identifies patient problems/focus through observation and interaction
- Observes and reports to circulating RN/surgeon/anesthesia personnel changes in patient’s condition and their response to peri-operative interventions
Demonstrates clinical competency in the delivery of patient care for assigned patients as evidenced by but not limited to:
- Prepares and labels syringes in accordance with policies and procedures
- Consults with responsible RN and accesses the medical record for pertinent patient information
Participates in the development of new staff as evidenced by but not limited to:
- Actively participates in the orientation including cultural and social integration of new staff
Demonstrates personal accountability as evidenced by but not limited to:
- Achieves educational credits to meet hospital requirements
- Shares information obtained at education conferences to staff members
- Participates in implementing departmental initiatives
- Conducts self in professional manner in dress, actions, and interpersonal communication
- Ensures environment of safety for patients, significant others, and coworkers
- Informs Director/Supervisor/Clinical Manager of patient care situations and departmental problems as appropriate
- Demonstrates effective problem solving skills for clinical and departmental issues
Demonstrates and maintains ongoing competency for:
- Prepares and labels syringes in accordance with policies and procedures
- Consults with responsible RN and accesses the medical record for pertinent patient information
- Accurately performs sponge/sharp/instrument counts
- Demonstrates proper handling and disposition of surgical specimens
Education: GRADUATE OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM REQUIRED-GRADUATE OF AN APPROVED SURGICAL FIRST ASSISTANT PROGRAM.
Experience: ONE YEAR PATIENT CARE EXPERIENCE PREFERRED; ONE YEAR OPERATING ROOM REQUIRED. CASE HOURS FULL-FILLED TO MAINTAIN CERTIFICATION
Required skills: SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST CERTIFICATION WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF
START DATE IN DEPARTMENT/POSITION; HEALTHCARE PROVIDER (CPR) CERTIFICATION
WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF START DATE IN DEPARTMENT/POSITION
