Position Details:

Human Resources, in partnership with the University community, supports the mission of Wesleyan University by providing services and programs that attract, develop, and retain a highly qualified and diverse workforce.

The Benefits Director is responsible for the strategic development, administration, and assessment of the university’s benefit and retirement programs, oversees workers’ compensation, wellness initiatives, and leave and disability programs.

Responsibilities Include:

Benefits Administration:

Lead the strategic planning process for university benefits.

Establish successful relationships with benefit consultants, insurance carriers, and vendors.

Ensure effective and compliant administrative processes.

Develop effective communication strategies related to benefits.

Oversee annual open enrollment.

Coordinate retirement committee meetings.

Supervise benefits staff.

Oversee benefits orientation.

Identify benefit trends and best practices.

Identify metrics for benefits programs.

Ensure timely and accurate data integrity with PeopleSoft system.

Oversee benefits website.

Maintain accurate summary plan descriptions.

Coordinate annual pension audit process.

Oversee reconciliation and processing of insurance billings.

Oversee COBRA and the benefits enrollment/termination process.

 

Wellness:
Oversee the University’s wellness program in collaboration with Athletics.

 

Leaves and Disability:

Oversee the workers comp program.

Manage the disability and life insurance benefits.

Manage family medical leave.

Ensure the accuracy and consistent application of the university’s leave policies.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 8 years’ experience in employee benefits administration or a combination of education and equivalent work experience.

Experience with all aspects of Health and Welfare including pension programs, HIPAA, 5500 filing, ERISA, COBRA, DOL, and other related statutes and regulations.

Experience working with brokers and legal counsel to ensure proper administration of all employee and retiree programs.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel and Access.

Experience setting priorities and managing benefits staff.

Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and success enhancing the benefit function at the organizational level.

Track record of developing and executing successful benefit program strategies.

Prior experience analyzing benefits programs, recommending, and implementing enhancements.

Demonstrated ability to take initiative and working independently to determine strategies for accomplishing work objectives.

Prior experience developing communication materials and presenting complex benefits data in population-specific formats.

Demonstrated experience thinking through complex problems and identifying solutions.

Demonstrated ability in continuously assessing program and process effectiveness, with a focus on continuous quality improvement.

Prior experience leading projects from start to finish and consistent ability to meet established timelines.

Experience employing exceptional customer service and effective communication skills and exhibiting a professional demeanor.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a diverse population at all organization levels.

Prior experience working with confidential information.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Benefits certification.

Experience administering self-funded benefit plans.

Experience developing and administering compensation structures.

Experience in a total rewards leadership role.
