Job Description:

The Application Architect role serves as part of our technical leadership within Information Technology. Application Architects are responsible for helping our Application Development teams design and implement solutions that meet project needs, but also take into consideration larger IT goals. Application Architects help define technical standards and best practices. The role also is responsible for looking ahead to help define new technologies and tools that will make Ferguson Development better.


  • Work with Business Analysts and Solution Managers to understand needs of other business departments.
  • Provide analysis and recommendation on the technical design of software development projects and for application and system improvement projects.
  • Top level technical expert in four or more highly specialized areas of applications systems analysis and programming.
  • Prepare detailed specifications from which programs will be written.
  • Responsible for analyzing and troubleshooting complex software problems and providing solutions to overcome those problems using the latest technologies.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex projects.
  • Fulfill business requirements by writing code on large complex software development projects. 
  • Complete unit testing for all developed code.
  • Complete architectural reviews of projects.
  • Complete project design and code reviews.
  • Design and build relational databases.
  • Review development practices to identify areas of improvement.
  • Assist project teams during load testing in problem identification and resolution.
  • Work with vendors to resolve 3rd Level or project issues.
  • Participate in RFP processes to validate vendor’s technical approach.
  • Evaluate 3rd party development tools.
  • Teach team members new skills in a classroom setting.



  • 8+ years experience programming in UniBasic/Pick Basic language, Java, or .NET.
  • 6+ years experience designing applications.
  • Individual will need to have proven the ability to deliver software development projects.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Business Information Systems, or comparable experience is required to perform at expectation.

Associate is expected to operate at the functional level across the following areas of technical knowledge and skill:

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations to groups.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).
  • Ability to lead a team through a technical discussion.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills.
  • Advanced experience developing software applications using UniBasic/Pick basic, Java, or .NET.
  • Experience designing and working with relational databases (Oracle & SQL Server preferred)
  • Experience using a Middleware platform and a ETL Tool
  • Experience designing in a Service Oriented Architecture and designing and implementing RESTful web services
  • Experience with Business Rules Engine(s)
  • Experience working with Data Cache(s), search platforms, and workflow orchestration tools.
  • Experience working in Waterfall and Agile-SCRUM SDLCs
