DTE Energy is currently seeking a Principal Engineer in their Detroit, MI location.
DTE Energy is a Detroit-based diversified energy company involved in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services in the United States and Canada.
As a Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for planning and conducting engineering activities with using Part 192 standards and guidelines.

As a Principal Engineer you will: 

  • Apply  of theories, precepts, practice and disciplines, including practical field experience
  • Make decisions on engineering problems and methods applicable to the resolution of important issues
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance/direction to Staff and operate as SME to support compliance training, pipeline compliance requests and work with internal/external stakeholders and develop DTE Gas Standards as well as prepare and manage state and federal regulator audits and inspections including developing agency response, meeting submission deadlines, resolving non-compliances through proven methodologies with a focus on mitigative measures
  • Develop, coordinate and direct projects or field engineering assignments with complex features
  • lead teams of employees, technicians, engineers and other personnel
  • Interfaces with outside departments, vendors, suppliers & reliability entities
  • Develop, conduct and communicate well both verbally and in writing in presentations of engineering projects to all levels of management and external parties (contractors, customers, etc.)
  • Creates accurate and punctual reports, deliver and share information and ideas. 
  • Plan and manage group workflow to meet budgets and schedules
  • Collaborate with business units (e.g. GIS, Drug and Alcohol Testing, One-Call, Operator Qualification, TIMP, DIMP, Storage, Public Awareness, Damage Prevention, Emergency Response, Operations, Technical Training, Control Room, Engineering, Construction Teams, Codes Staff, etc.) on compliance issues.
  •  Assist on special projects to ensure pipeline safety initiatives are incorporated to align with the Pipeline Safety Management System. 
  • Provide general support to the internal Stakeholder with focus on continuous improvement of systems, documentation practices with a focus on consistency and standardization
  • Provide regulatory updates to DTE Gas from PHMSA, MPSC, NTSB, etc.
  • Participate in industry workshops and manage on-call request and travel internally/externally to Stakeholder meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to research, compile, prepare studies, responses to proposed changes in regulations, recommendations, policies, procedures, and correspondence
  • Experience reading and interpreting applicable governmental regulations pertaining to state and federal-regulated intrastate and interstate pipelines; company and/or industry publications related to pipeline reporting compliance; researching, identifying, evaluating and prioritizing problems or situations and coordinating appropriate actions or responses
  • Review documents, prepare checklists, audit agendas, conduct pre and post audits and prepare final reports
  • Conduct incident investigations and root cause analyses
  • Makes decisions systematically and under pressure, build consensus, make difficult/unpopular decisions and consider impact of decisions 

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Degree 
  • 6 years of experience as an Engineer/Project management in the Oil and Gas or Liquids Field 
  • Experience  Part 192 - Transportation Of Natural And Other Gas By Pipeline Minimum Federal Safety Standards required 
  • Testing and/or writing sample will be required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, primarily Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access as well as Visio, Power BI and SharePoint
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong time management, project management, prioritization, and organization skills
  • Proficient communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Quality Assurance or Quality Management System experience

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master's Degree in Engineering or job relevant discipline
  • API 1169 Certification
  • ANST Level II MT, PT and/or UT
  • AWS or AISC Certification, API 1104
  • Demonstrate welding experience
  • NACE Certification (CP Level 1-4, Coating Inspector Level 1-3)
  • Fusing Welding
  • Incident Investigation
  • Certified Auditor Training
