This position will be a combination of Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist Technician for the 3rd floor laboratory. The Medical Assistant role will be focused on prescription refills and prior authorizations.
MEDICAL ASSISTANT SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Assists in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management.
Performs nursing and administrative duties.
Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient vital signs, reviews medications and allergies with the patient and enters all health questionnaire information into the EMR.
Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments and supplies.
Applies splints and dressings as ordered.
Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
Assists physicians or nurse practitioners in preparing for surgical procedures, Pap Smears, 24-hour BP monitoring and physicals.
Verifies all patients by DOB (date of birth) and full name.
Performs procedures and accompanying paperwork for EKG’s, BP monitoring, staple and suture removal, and Pap Smears when applicable.
Promotes office discharge process as follows: Schedules requested testing, outside physician appointments, writes or enters required lab orders and prescriptions then gives all information to patient with instructions or faxes orders and/or prescriptions to the appropriate facility or pharmacy.
Triages telephone calls for referral to physician or nurse practitioner.
Responsible for restocking examination rooms weekly.
PHLEBTOMIST TECHNICIAN SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Collects specimens from patients and prepares these specimens for in-house or send-out testing. Also requires some testing of CLIA waived exams, use of computers and associated software.
Collects blood specimens from patient veins and fingers.
Collects all urine specimens as CCMS urines.
Collects specimens for select microbiology testing.
Collects all specimens in accordance with specimen collection manual, reference manual and lab policies.
Collects specimens at specified times.
Prepares reference lab specimens according to reference manual.
Instructs patients and gives them a handout on any patient collected specimens, such as 24-hour urine collections.
Performs urinary dipstick testing and other CLIA waived exams.
Responsible for inventory of phlebotomy area to include reference laboratory supplies.
Maintains supplies in phlebotomy room as required.
High School Diploma or GED required
Medical Assistant Training from an Accredited School
At least two years of work experience as a Phlebotomist Technician
Six weeks on-the-job training as Phlebotomist Technician
