Design mechanical and electromechanical products; mainly hair clippers and/or hair care products.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare conceptual designs. Researches and analyzes data such as design proposals and specifications to determine feasibility of a design. Suggest alternative designs.
  • Make preliminary layouts in CAD. This will establish the boundaries or limits that the Industrial Design must conform to.
  • Develop the final shape and motion of parts as well as over-all size and appearance of the design. The size and appearance of the outside of the product is developed in conjunction with an Industrial Designer.
  • The final design of all the parts is to be completed using a 3D MCAD package. At the present time Andis Company uses Solidworks.
  • Prepare STL files for use in making prototypes. Evaluate the prototype to determine if any design changes are necessary. Coordinate any prototype testing required to assure the product meets the design specifications.
  • Prepare assembly instructions or assembly flow chart for the product being designed.
  • Host Design Feasibility Meetings with Production, Quality and Manufacturing Engineering departments to assure that the design will be practical to manufacture.
  • Direct and assist drafting personnel in preparing 2D detail drawings of the individual components. Determine the dimensioning scheme and assign critical dimensions.
  • Make and continually update the Bill of Materials for the product. Direct and assist the drafter/Engineering Co-op in releasing the initial Bill of Materials to be entered into the AS400 Mainframe computer by Production Control.
  • Required design tasks: Calculate spring rates. Calculate the strength of materials. Calculate mechanical motions including the blade stroke and switch actuation distances. Tolerance parts using ANSI standard practices including Geometric Tolerances where applicable. Specify the proper type of screw for the application. Develop alternate fasteners as required including snap fits and hooks. Determine press fits or clearances as required. Determine the parting line and draft angles for plastic parts. Determine the plastic material to be used based on the product specifications.
  • Communicate with outside suppliers and the toolmakers to assure that the design intent is known. Address any concerns that the supplier or toolmaker has as to the manufacture of the tool or the finished part. Change the design as required assuring a product that is easy to manufacture.
  • Assist the Product Engineer at the time of first production to make any design changes that are required to assure ease of assembly.
  • Participate in the Product Launch Meetings and assist in filling out the Product Launch Checklist.
Qualifications

Associate's degree (A.A./A.S.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and  one to three years experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
