JOB PURPOSE AND SUMMARY


This is a highly technical position responsible for the architecture and design of complex Unix computing environments, which are the foundation for all Agency computer services.   Focuses on AIX/Suse Linux Administration, Virtualization technologies, IBM hardware and Disaster Recovery processes.  The position requires great cross collaboration teamwork skills to coordinate and support other system administrators, architects, and programmers within the Agency.


 


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES Operating system and hardware maintenance (30%)


·       Design, maintain, and document VIO (Virtual I/O) server configurations/layouts.


·       Build new servers using Power VM Virtualization.


·       Coordinate Pseries hardware and firmware upgrades.


·       Maintain IBM Hardware Management Consoles(HMC).


·       Coordinate AIX operating system upgrades on Pseries, and Suse Linux on Z/OS and ESX platforms.


·       Apply emergency/hot fixes to AIX and Linux operating systems.


·       Ensure security guidelines are implemented and audited.


 


Tivoli Storage Manager Administration (25%)


·       Establish and maintain Disaster Recovery Backup strategies and recoverability using Tivoli Storage Manager.


·       Manage upgrades and maintenance of Tivoli Storage Manager software.


·       Develop and test Disaster Recovery plan using mksysb and file restores.


·       Coordinate maintenance of Disaster Recovery retention policies. Collaborate with application owners to implement sound, reasonable backup and retention policies.


·       Support a current Data DeDuplication technology.


 


Architecture and Design of Unix Systems (25%)


·       Provide expert knowledge in the layout and configuration of IBM Pseries Power6 hardware, VIO servers, and Storage Area Networks.


·       Provide LPAR, Virtual SCSI, VLAN, and I/O high availability strategy for the Pseries equipment. (Eg – etherchannel, trunking, vlan tagging, I/O drawer layout, etc).


·       Develop migration plans for major system upgrades. Create gold images used to build new servers to DOD STIG standards.


 


Storage Area Network(SAN) Administration (15%)


·       Conduct monitoring and reporting for DS8000 series storage systems, as well as IBM fiber switches and San Volume Controllers(SVC).


·       Develop capacity planning for existing systems and implementation guidance for system upgrades.


·       Create Arrays, Ranks, Extent Pools, and Luns on DS8000 series storage systems.


·       Assign Luns as virtual scsi devices on the VIO server and as Mdisks on the SVC.


·       Provide specialized performance tuning and throughput configuration on the SAN.


 


Technical Assistance (5%)


·       Troubleshoot various production/implementation issues involving a variety of Unix based software applications establishing root cause and recommending solutions.


 


QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Minimum Qualifications: 


·       Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and five plus years of AIX/Unix experience or an equivalent combination of skills, experience with training and/or certification.


·       Any job-related certifications, secondary education, or experience a plus.


·       Proficient understanding of AIX/Linux environments, x86 Intel environments, Storage Area Networks, and Disaster Recovery strategies.


·       Advanced networking and shell scripting concepts.


·       Highly developed problem solving skills and the ability to focus attention on details.


·       Proficient in troubleshooting complex technical problems.


·       Demonstrated experience successfully delivering complex initiatives, meeting quality and time expectations.


·       Must be able to communicate at a highly technical level in order to work effectively with peers and other I/T staff.
