A non-profit 501(c) 3 organization headquartered in Kirtland, Ohio, seeks an experienced candidate for a part-time accountant position. The Society is dedicated to promoting the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research, and sharing the experience of its members with the community. With over 2,200 members and forty units located across the country, the group supports numerous public gardens as well as provides seed money for school herb garden projects and research grants for promising scientists.  In addition to its herbal educational programs, the organization actively promotes conservation efforts through its GreenBridgesTM and Notable NativeTM Herb programs.

General responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization

  • Help to ensure the fiscal integrity of HSA, to include submission to the Board of monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.

  • Ensure timely filing and compliance with state and federal reports and registrations

  • Ensure timely updates to HSA’s GuideStar profile

  • Manage vendor relationships

  • Prepare bookkeeping entries

  • Follow established accounting processes

  • Manage accounts payable activities

  • Manage accounts receivable activities

  • Coordinate with service provider for payroll processing and payroll tax filings

  • Perform monthly bank and investment account reconciliation

  • Maintain detailed reconciliation of net assets and all balance sheet accounts

  • Provide monthly/quarterly reports and detailed analyses and explanations of all transactions

  • Coordinate annual audit and prepare documentation for external auditors

  • Ensure regulatory compliance with the Ohio Attorney General and the Ohio Secretary of State

  • Prepare or coordinate the preparation of the annual tax return

 

Specific Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and accounting in a nonprofit organization

  • Experience with audit, legal compliance, and budget development

  • General management skills

  • Knowledge of QuickBooks for Nonprofits

  • Technologically savvy, with experience overseeing information technology staff or vendors

  • Experience effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, the Board or other outside partners/influencers/clients

  • Success seeing beyond the numbers, identifying trends and new possibilities

  • Bachelor's degree required / Licensed CPA desired
