Job Description

Communications Manager

Every seven minutes someone in America becomes blind or visually impaired – there are an estimated 8 million blind or visually impaired individuals in the United States alone. With continued medical advancements, various possibilities for managing sight loss and for restoring sight are available, including corneal transplantation. The Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) is a not-for-profit organization of eye banks dedicated to the restoration of sight through the promotion and advancement of eye banking and corneal transplantation.

As the Communications Manager for EBAA, you will raise the visibility and profile of the incredible work that our members do – literally giving the gift of sight and enabling blind people to see. You will report to the president & CEO to formulate, implement, and manage EBAA’s overall communications plan. Your work will inform our members of our activity on their behalf, increase the visibility of the brand, promote programs and services to both internal (members) and external (media and the public) audiences, increase our social media presence (including cross promotions with our members), and where appropriate, increase our engagement with media outlets (particularly around member accomplishments and national campaigns).

As a staff of seven FTEs and one consultant, EBAA is a highly engaged and collaborative organization where we all work closely together to achieve results. You will coordinate with your colleagues across EBAA to ensure member engagement and collaborate with member organizations regarding cross promotions, campaigns, and branding efforts. You will also be charged with leading the campaigns for annual events, including our annual Run for Vision and Eye Donation Month. You will manage the creation, design, and publication of meeting materials, including PowerPoint templates, programs, meeting app graphics, and signage.

You will oversee the EBAA website, keeping content fresh and increasing functionality and user-friendliness. You will craft and manage the editorial calendar as you oversee the production of our newsletters and other publications. You will format, edit, and distribute Focal Point, our bi-weekly legislative and advocacy update; Insight, our monthly electronic member newsletter; and our Annual Report. You will also serve as the point of contact to the editorial board of the International Journal of Eye Banking, helping to enhance its visibility and reach.

Organization Overview

EBAA is the nationally recognized accrediting body for eye banks. Eye banks are unique because they recover, evaluate, and distribute tissue for transplantation, research, and education. Working closely with corneal surgeons, they provide the precious gift of sight from donor to recipient, ensuring a safe and efficient process.

Eye banks have a long and proud history. They have been the stewards of the gift of sight throughout the world for over seven decades. The first corneal transplant was performed in 1905, and the first eye bank opened in New York in 1944. The opening of the New York bank marked the first organized attempt to facilitate the transfer of tissue from donor to patient; today EBAA represents 75 U.S. and 15 international eye banks. Thousands of corneal transplants are performed every year across the country, restoring sight to young and old alike, with approximately 75,000 grafts provided for transplant last year.

Responsibilities of the Communications Manager

Communications

  • Formulate EBAA’s overall communications strategy including public relations, branding, and design.
  • Oversee EBAA’s website, keeping content fresh and up-to-date and making recommendations for increased functionality.
  • Develop EBAA collateral materials for use in program and product promotion and advocacy efforts with attention to the consistency of branding and message.
  • Consult with staff on how best to communicate association activities and programs.
  • Track and report on the success of various efforts.

Publications

  • Format, edit, and distribute Focal Point, EBAA’s bi-weekly legislative and advocacy update with content provided by the director of regulations and standards.
  • Conceptualize, develop, edit, and distribute Insight, EBAA’s monthly electronic member newsletter, using relevant articles from staff and writing other content as needed.
  • Work with the director of meetings and director of education to create, design, and publish meeting materials including PowerPoint templates, programs, meeting app graphics, and signage.
  • Distribute email updates to members regarding association events, programs, and services.
  • Maintain the EBAA website, conducting periodic reviews to refresh content and keep up with user experience principles and best practices.
  • Package and distribute the quarterly International Journal of Eye Banking online publication with content from the editorial board.
  • Spearhead the creation, content, design, and publication of the Annual Report.

Social Media

  • Establish a schedule for posts to Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms.
  • Create and publish content daily or as often as appropriate.
  • Work with EBAA members to develop content and to link to or re-post appropriate posts on their pages.
  • Develop specific campaign/programs to coincide with EBAA meetings, events, and educational programs or to support our advocacy efforts.

Public Relations

  • Work with EBAA's public relations vendor to develop strategies to increase public awareness and appreciation for organ/eye/tissue donation and transplantation.
  • Build a list of contacts with appropriate media outlets within and outside the transplant community to whom stories can be pitched and placed.
  • Cultivate relationships with relevant media and communications counterparts at other transplant and healthcare organizations.
  • Spearhead EBAA’s Eye Donation Month program.

Job Requirements

Qualifications of the Communications Manager

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in communications, public relations, and/or marketing, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
  • Must have experience developing and implementing a comprehensive communications plan, including social media, email campaigns, and annual reports.
  • Must know how to create communications standards and maintain consistency across the organization.
  • Must have a demonstrable understanding of the principles and execution of social media strategy.
  • Experience with WordPress (or similar CMS experience) required.
  • Experience with Informz, netFORUM, InDesign, Photoshop, or other design tools preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
