Mechanic - Heavy Equipment/Diesel

Dean Transportation is seeking a diesel mechanic to service school buses in Jackson, MI.  Competitive salary and benefits package provided.  Salary based on skills and experience.  This is a full-time, day shift position that may additionally require occasional evenings and/or weekends.

Purpose of Job:

The purpose of this job is to perform as Mechanic within the Company. Duties and responsibilities involve all areas of vehicle maintenance diagnosis and repair on school buses, pick-up trucks, vans, tractors, forklifts, and cars owned by the Company and additional government owned vehicles. Reports to Lead Mechanic.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Diagnoses vehicle problems and performs repairs as needed in accordance with manufacturers' instructions and State and Federal regulations; performs road tests on vehicles. Inspects and repairs electrical system from front to rear. Performs engine tune-ups; troubleshoots and repairs engines; rebuilds if necessary; must be able to perform complete engine rebuilding for both gasoline and diesel engines without supervision. Inspects, services, and repairs transmissions, cooling lines and filters. Inspects, services, and repairs brake systems, air and hydraulic; inspects, services, and repairs drive train from transmission to rear axle. Inspect, services, and repairs front suspension. Inspects, services, and repairs windows and frames.

Inspects, services, and repairs wiper motors, switches, arms and blades. Checks body damage and handles some repairs. Inspects, services, and repairs cooling systems, radiator, hoses, pump and block. Answers service calls and responds to breakdowns; conducts on-site repairs when possible. Repairs carburetors and fuel problems; inspects, services, and repairs exhaust systems.

Repairs hydraulic wheel chair lifts and hydraulic lift gates; installs seat belts and harness on Special Needs buses.

Installs accessories such as radios, strobe lights, camera boxes, etc.

Prepares vehicle maintenance reports and submits to Supervisor. Reviews technical reports, vehicle maintenance manuals, electrical diagrams and meter readings to evaluate, diagnose and repair; consults with vendors concerning ordering or use of parts.

Consults with bus drivers and mechanics regarding maintenance problems/needs and advises or assists as necessary.

Performs safety inspections; assists with Michigan State Police Inspections.

Cleans shop floor, drain pan, buckets, etc.; disposes of unusable replacement parts such as batteries, brake drums, etc.; disposes of used motor oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze. May change oil and repair or replace tires.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions: 

Technical School degree in automotive, truck and tractor maintenance preferred, with three to five years of vehicle maintenance experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience, as determined by Management, which provides or demonstrates the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Michigan Commercial Drivers License Class B with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsements. Some operation centers may require the mechanic to function as a substitute school bus driver if circumstances require additional drivers. Mechanics may be required to possess or obtain licenses and certifications required to drive a school bus with passengers. 

Must possess or be able to obtain a current Mechanic License through either ASE or the State of Michigan in the following areas: Heavy Duty Brakes, Heavy Duty Suspension & Steering, Heavy Duty Diesel Engines, Heavy Duty Drive Train, and electrical.May also be certified in Computer Electronic Engine and Transmission Diagnostics. 

Physical Requirements: 

Must be able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:Operate a variety of automotive machines, mechanics tools, and equipment such as wrecker, A/C recovery recycler, injector tester, brake bleeder, various meters and gauges, tire machine, tire spreader, plasma cutter, service truck, sledgehammer, wrenches, cutting torch, hydraulic and air lift, engine hoist and stands, wheel dolly, drill press, tire iron, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to thirty-five to fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weight of fifty to one hundred pounds

Must be able to obtain (or currently possess) a current Mechanic License through either ASE or the State of Michigan in the following areas: Heavy Duty Brakes, Heavy Duty Suspension & Steering, Heavy Duty Diesel Engines, Heavy Duty Drive Train, and electrical.  May also be certified in Computer Electronic Engine and Transmission Diagnostics.


Excellent driving history and a minimum of 7 years of driving experience with an unrestricted license is required. Must possess a Commercial Driver's License or successfully obtain one upon being hired. Must have excellent references and must pass criminal background check, DOT physical and drug screening.
