Robert Wood Johnson is seeking an advanced practice provider to join the Cancer Center. This is a per diem opportunity to join a dynamic team at the state s only NCI designated Cancer Center. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated learner and able to collaborate with medical and nursing colleagues.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Patient Management
  • Performs comprehensive initial and episodic health assessments; in order to identify existing or potential health problems.
  • Initiates and implements an individualized nursing and medical plan of care in collaboration with members of interdisciplinary team.
  • Initiates appropriate diagnostic, therapeutic, medical and nursing actions in conjunction with physician.
  • Provides follow-up care including acute and routine examinations. Assesses progress, identify problems, initiate preventive measures, recognize emergent problems, initiate proper care in collaboration with physician.
  • Monitors and adjusts patients medication according to protocol or medical plan of care including adequate pain control. Implements nutritional therapies, as appropriate.
  • Triages patient problem calls which requires medical attention.
  • Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Recognizes normal and abnormal laboratory findings and the pathology involved.
  • Documents information in patients charts following documentation standards established by RWJUH and the Cancer Institute.
  • Provides health education to the patient and family (e.g., management of side effects, anticipatory teaching.
  • Manages medical emergencies as indicated, and according to standing orders.
  • Provides monitoring and continuity of care between health care settings.
  • Provides patient and family counseling and reassurance in regard to psychological and or psychosocial issues. Initiates proper referrals to private or community agencies.
  • Acts as a resource and teacher for other members of the health care team. Shares knowledge and expertise with staff.
  • Collaborates with the Cancer Institute's nursing and medical staff at partner and affiliate sites to coordinate continuity of care.
  • Evaluates the quality of care as well as the quality of life for patients through assessment of patient response and recommend interventions, as indicated.
  • Supports the research mission by collaborating with the research nurse. Identifies and screens patients for appropriate eligibility for protocol study participation and aids in the accumulation and recording of date regarding patients on protocols.
    Professional Practice/Development:
  • Demonstrates in depth oncology specific, as well as general medical-surgical knowledge base. Provides rational explanation for clinical decisions made or actions taken based on one or more of the following:
  • Standard Operating Procedures established by RWJUH and the Cancer Institute.
  • Scientific principle, logic.
  • Intuition.
  • Relevant, effective experience.
  • Serves as a role model in advanced practice oncology nursing.
  • Utilizes communication strategies and techniques with individuals to achieve:
  • Intended or desired results and responses.
  • A perception of acceptance or satisfaction by those involve
  • Attends relevant continuing education programs with population specific focus. Records activities in employee development record.
  • Participates in professional organizations.
  • Communicate advances/shares expertise in nursing practice through presentation and publication process.
  • Applies pertinent research findings to clinical practice. Suggests and/or conducts research related to nursing practice.
  • Participates in formal and informal instruction of nursing students, professional nurses and other health professionals.
  • Serves as a resource/consultant in patient care issues to partner and affiliate institutions.
  • Maintains accountability for effective time management. Adjusts hours of work to meet job demands.
  • Participates in evaluation of quality improvement activities related to patient care and satisfaction.
  • Serves as a preceptor for inexperienced Nurse Practitioners.
  • Acts as a role model for corporate integrity, customer service and improved quality.
  • Understands and adheres to RWJUH and the Cancer Institute's policies.
  • Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    • Current NJ APN/PA license and certification required
    • Master s degree required or Graduate Level Certification
    • Certified Nurse Practitioner with specialization in oncology - necessary to obtain ongoing education in oncology if not certified
      • Oncology certification is required within one year of hire date
    • CDS required
    • DEA required
    • BLS required
    • ACLS required for inpatient positions
    • 2 years of experience in the oncology specialty area in a hospital or clinic setting preferred
    • Proficient and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
