Job Description

Position Summary
The Fire Protection Engineer consults with customers and staff on fire protection requirements, employing both education and practical experience and applying recognized codes and standards to provide alternatives and solutions to protect personnel and assets from potential fires.
Specific Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide engineering and/or design on specific projects, delivering effective and cost efficient alternatives and solutions for the project.

• Provide code and standard references, document research, and both formal reports and informal interpretations for fire protection applications.

• Directly engage customers, including consulting, presentations, teleconferencing, and written communication.

• Perform on-site surveys and studies of customer data to develop reports and recommendations for fire protection applications.

• Provide proposals, defined scope of work, pricing, and cost budgeting for engineering and design work.

• Continuously review changing codes, standards, industry specifications and practices and share new developments with staff.

• Continuously review new technologies and software for use in fire protection applications and share new developments with staff.

• Provide assistance to engineering, design, and construction staff, including design and code interpretations and design changes as required.

• Work closely with the Total Safety engineering staff, Construction Manager, Project Managers, Sales, and other discipline engineers and designers.

• Create and maintain fire protection CAD / modeling standards.

• Provide technical assistance to internal and external customers.

Job Requirements

Qualifications
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, either in the field of fire protection or with a minimum of two (2) years of practical experience in fire protection. Professional Engineer (PE) accreditation preferred. At Management discretion, can substitute at least five (5) years of experience combined with other applicable fire protection certifications or accreditations. Experience in fire protection design in petrochemical, oil refinery or related industrial applications is preferred.
Required Licenses or Specific Training: Must have experience using AutoCAD. Must be able to acquire and maintain licenses and certifications necessary to perform assigned responsibilities. Must be able to travel. Must be able to obtain TWIC card and pass any required safety testing, including classes such as Basic Plus, OSHA 10 hour, etc.
Proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility and customer required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Trained in Respiratory Protection and fully certified to wear respiratory breathing equipment (Fit Tested).
Other Required Skills, Knowledge or Abilities: Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook and other data base software. Proficiency with AutoCAD. Proficiency with other design software, such as HydraCAD, 3D modelling programs, hydraulic calculation software, and/or Adobe Acrobat is desired.
Must demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, an unwavering commitment to safety and health and other company policies and procedures. Must possess high ethical standards demonstrated by their approach to business.
Must demonstrate leadership and the ability to coordinate resources to achieve maximum profitability, efficiency and utilization.
Must be able to prepare accurate, effective, complete and easily understood written communications and reports.
Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
Interpersonal Communications: Effective communication (written, verbal and listening) and interpersonal skills. Ability to read, interpret, and create technical procedures, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively interact with and develop and maintain strong rapport and credibility with senior management in company and client organizations. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to speak Spanish, or other second language considered a plus.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Uses hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and also perform work using a personal computer or work station. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
Combination of office, shop, indoor and outdoor industrial environments. May be frequently exposed to cold, hot, wet, humid, outside weather conditions and vibration. Works in customer environment. May be exposed to high pressure, chemicals, and traffic. The noise level in work environment is usually moderate.
Reporting Relationships
Complexity of Duties and Decisions: Determines the means or process of achieving the objectives, standards or guidelines established by management. These decisions are subject to the limits imposed by the available technology and resources and to the constraints set by upper management. Must be prepared to handle a variety of situations in changing environments. Must identify source of problems and present well thought out, workable solutions.
Authority: Typically works with limited supervision. In consultation with manager, develops deadlines, projects, and work to be done. Assistance is given with unusual situations that do not have clear objectives. Plans and carries out successive steps and resolves problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, and accepted practices.
