Job Description

SUMMARY:
Acts as direct support to Production Manager & is “Go To” Supervisor or liaison between Packaging supervisors & Production Manager. Assists in responsibility for the overall performance of the Packaging Department while focusing on Cost, Quality, Safety and Employee Environment. Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to Packaging personnel. Develops supervisory team skills and abilities to support the plant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Communicate and interact effectively with the department personnel, Production Manager, all departments, plants, support services and all levels of management to ensure the smooth operation of the process.
  • Work with our suppliers, customers, production planning and customer service to insure customer needs are satisfied for product performance, quality, cost, and timely shipment of orders.
  • Monitor and oversee the quality of the finished product by maintaining the equipment and facility in a sanitary condition to meet regulatory, customer, and company standards; work with plant sanitation, Quality Assurance, and Chemical representatives to monitor and improve.
  • Maintain inventory and reorder ingredients.
  • Lead problem-solving efforts through the facilitation of team meetings and on the floor leadership. Document issues aggressively to ensure resolution and reduce/eliminate future occurrences.
  • Forecast, plan and manage the receipt of raw material needs for processing of finished product.
  • Organize and plan optimum daily production schedules.
  • Develop a yearly departmental budget in conjunction with the Production Manager.
  • Monitor and control department costs in comparison with budgetary standards.
  • Monitor and maintain labor staffing accordingly to meet or exceed the labor cost per pound objectives.
  • Counsel and discipline employees in a fair and consistent manner in accordance with Company and plan policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the work of department supervisors; provide support, leadership & development tools based on their individual work performance.
  • Oversee the performance of the department while focusing on Cost, Quality, Safety and Employee Environment.
  • Provide departmental safety training and enforce safe working practices at all times; document and investigate every accident and injury in an effort to prevent future occurrences.
  • Promote safety programs and policies in order to reduce the number of accidents and injuries; ensure involvement of designated parties.
  • Schedules employee work hours so as to minimize overtime and posts schedules in a timely manner.
  • Enforce behavioral based safety, as well as Good Manufacturing Practices and constantly ensure the quality of the product.
  • Responsible for special projects assigned to & outcome for the plant.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees all Packaging personnel; responsibilities include training employees, disciplining employees, planning, assigning, and directing work.
FOOD SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Packaging manager is responsible for food safety including, but not limited to enforcing and practicing GMP’s and appropriate food defense techniques.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelors Degree in a related field; five (5) years of food packaging experience; or equivalent combination of education and supervisory experience
  • Budgeting experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of computer programs (i.e., Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Ability to define programs, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to lead, influence and motivate people
  • Ability to understand cost containment and budgetary principles
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with good time management and organizational skills
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Being able to resolve issues/problems that involve numerous variables in demanding situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, and squat for several minutes at a time
  • Must be able to stand on feet for at least a two hour consecutive time period
  • Must be able to lift up to eighty (80) pounds
  • Must be able to enter into confined spaces
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear
  • Employee is required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle or feel
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and ability to adjust focus
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts
  • Environment is occasionally damp and cold. Caustic, acid, and chlorine chemicals will be used and may emit fumes into the air
  • Floors may be wet and slippery
  • Room temperatures will range from 35 degrees F. to an excess of 130 degrees F
  • The use of safety glasses, ear plugs, dust masks, rubber gloves, rubber boots and aprons are all necessary in this area.
