Position Description
The Department of Africana Studies at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), invites highly qualified, motivated, and well-organized applicants for a pool of part-time teaching appointments.

The Department of Africana Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities offers a major and a minor in Africana Studies. Africana Studies is primarily a discipline which investigates the social, cultural, political and aesthetic dimensions of Africana peoples' experiences. These experiences range from earliest human civilizations through the tragic era of enslavement, colonization and involuntary dispersal through forced migration and displacement of African peoples. The intellectual framework that sets Africana Studies apart from other disciplines is that it explores the subject area from the perspective of Africana peoples' interests, aspirations, possibilities, and envisioned destinies.
Mission
The Department of Africana Studies provides students with an opportunity to study the historical and contemporary realities of the African world experience. Through comprehensive course offerings, research, community service, study abroad opportunities, symposia, colloquia, and conferences, the Department of Africana Studies strives to produce critical thinkers, scholars and leaders with broad intellectual perspectives, and skills required to function effectively and comfortably in a multicultural environment.
The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available.
Responsibilities
Teach assigned lower and upper division courses in the department’s curriculum and serve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline.
- Prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of strong teaching.
- Applicants must have experience in teaching and working with colleagues from diverse ages, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in Africana Studies, Black Studies, African American Studies, Pan African or related discipline and prior college-level teaching experience and relevant industry experience.
- A Ph.D. in Africana Studies, Black Studies, African American Studies, Pan African or related discipline and prior college-level teaching experience and relevant industry experience is required for teaching upper-division core courses (300- or 400-level).
Employment Requirement
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
Additional Information
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.
