("NSI"), a group company of Nippon Seiki, located in Troy, MI, is a tier one supplier of instrument clusters and head-up display units for FCA US, General Motors, BMW, Honda, Harley Davidson, Suzuki, Polaris, Arctic Cat and other OEM's.

Purpose of Job

The Research and Development Controller reports directly to the Engineering Division Director while working closely and supporting the Finance Department, and is responsible for all aspects of accounting/finance-related activities with the Design and Development (D&D) throughout departmental and program budgeting and variance analysis reporting; including, but not limited to capital, expenses, and engineering labor hours. Other duties include tracking of D&D expenditures by program, department, and engineering financial reporting preparation.

Major Duty/Responsibility of Job1.40%
•Creates, monitors, and maintains a system of controls to track R&D expenditures by customer, program, department, and type vs. budget.
•Develops D&D amortization schedules and payback tracking.
•Tracks eng. D&D expenditures for fixed assets to the capital budget and mgmt authorizations.
•Reviews all D&D open commitments (PO’s) for budgeting and forecasting needs; reconciles D&D eng. hrs and non-recurring expenses monthly (added from below).
•Develops D&D perf. reports and variance analysis reports based upon needs (e.g. per headcount, capital, amortization, total cost, SG&A expenses monthly and YTD trends).
•Prepares monthly budget vs. actual reports by program and dept. and conducts monthly reviews with internal depts.
•Develops KPI’s to report monthly to mgmt team.
•Prepares monthly D&D expenses; pulls together Eng. expenses: non-recurring, program specific depreciation, and outside contractor with Finance Dept.
•Researches and maintains records of prev. program costs for new program cost estimating.
•Assists in setup of timekeeping with proper categories to best monitor performance. 2.40%
•Prepares the D&D program & capital budgets based on Eng. Dept. leaders’ input.
•Supports and assists SG&A Budget prep and D&D budget presentation and overview of the financial status of associated operations.
•Prepares, executes and updates D&D budget process, SG&A monthly and rolling forecast, and communicates plan.
•Analyzes past and prepares current D&D budget estimates, examines for correctness, accuracy, completeness, and conformance with established procedures, regulations, and organizational objectives.
•Supports VA/VE activities and provides recommendations to improve the D&D and budgeting processes. 3.10%
•Supports process improvement initiatives for Eng., Accounting, and Finance programs and projects.
•Recommends process improvements to ensure accurate and appropriate information, tools, and processes are in place.
•Develops and maintains work instructions and makes suggestions to improve internal controls.
•Supports the D&D accounting manual development and maintenance while cooperating with other Nippon Seiki – North American companies.
•Reviews and improves all existing program and departmental cost estimations and analysis documents. 4. 10%
•Creates training material and provides applicable training to Eng. team. 
•Supports / assists in preparing audit requests for interim and year-end audit for both external and internal auditors (JSox and statutory); researches issues, clarifies information, and prepares supporting data.
•Supports /assists in preparing R&D tax credit lead by Finance Dept.
•Interfaces with other depts. to verify transactions, report data issues, and recommends appropriate action.

Education, Experience and Knowledge

Required and/or preferred level of education, knowledge and skills that are necessary.


Education

•Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance


Related Experience


•Minimum of 4-5 years of previous work experience in Finance or related field required; R&D/D&D environment at a tier one automotive supplier preferred.
•Working knowledge of GAAP and other statutory accounting requirements; understanding of accounting laws and regulations.
•Experience preparing engineering financial reports and budgets.
•Previous experience maintaining account balances.
•Excellent English verbal/written communication skills, organization skills, and accuracy of work; bilingual in English and Japanese preferred.
•Advanced knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Project, Outlook, etc.).
•Experience managing files and producing supporting information as responses to internal and external audits.

Additional Information

Work Hours
Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00pm. Off-hours as needed.
Travel Requirements

5% domestic and/or international.

If domestic travel is necessary, valid drivers’ license is required.
