PhD-level Quantitative Researcher - Harm Reduction Policy, Implementation, and Evaluation

Research Triangle Institute Berkeley, CA (Onsite) Full-Time

RTI International is recruiting a PhD-level Harm Reduction Specialist within its Community Health & Implementation Research Program in the Center on Behavioral Health Epidemiology, Implementation & Evaluation Research.

This individual will be responsible for designing studies, analyzing quantitative data, and writing manuscripts and proposals for harm reduction evaluation, implementation science, and policy evaluation projects. This includes projects evaluating harm reduction services (syringe access, naloxone, safe consumption sites, drug checking) and drug policy (drug decriminalization). We encourage applications from Black individuals, indigenous people, and other people of color, individuals from groups historically under-represented in the health sciences, and people with lived experience that may be relevant to this position.

To facilitate collaboration with existing teams and to allow regular presence at field sites, this position will be based in RTI’s Berkeley, California regional office. There is a possibility of hybrid (office/home) work.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as Project Director or Principal investigator on medium scale community-based studies involving people who use drugs in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout California

  • Conduct and supervise field-based research (mainly in the San Francisco Bay Area), including overseeing study design, data collection, data analysis and reporting

  • Publish papers in peer-reviewed journals and participate in professional meetings and associations

  • Participate in development of proposals and grant applications; provide input on sections with high technical complexity requiring application of relevant harm reduction principles and strategies

  • Lead professional development activities to increase understanding of and capacity for harm reduction strategies and policies

  • Participate in cross-institute initiatives and external collaborations that require harm reduction expertise

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in public health, epidemiology, health services research, organizational sociology, or related field

  • Experience with harm reduction, substance use, criminal legal system, or homelessness research

  • Demonstrated expertise in appropriate quantitative research and evaluation methods

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise reports and presentations about data and complex issues and the ability to communicate with government officials and organizational clients

  • Demonstrated scientific stature in peer-reviewed publications and service to professional organizations

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team

  • Ability to work in RTI's Berkeley, CA regional office (hybrid work arrangements may be an option, but there will be regular, in-office work)

  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven success of securing contracts or grants funding from state or federal agencies (e.g., DHHS, AHRQ, NIH, CMS, CDC, SAMHSA, HRSA, VA, DOD, PCORI) or foundations is preferred

  • Proven ability to lead multi-stakeholder initiatives and collaborations

  • Demonstrated expertise in mixed methods research

  • Experience in mentoring trainees and other staff
