We are seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to support Lincoln Prairie’s mission. The LPN is a member of the interdisciplinary team who assist in total patient care through implementation of appropriate therapeutic approaches and related nursing function within therapeutic environment. The LPN is responsible for carrying out assigned functions according to philosophy, goal and objectives of the hospital and program unit.
Hours for this position are flexible, but require at least two (2) worked shifts per month, one (1) of which must be a weekend shift.
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
- Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment.
- Provides patient orientation.
- Conducts groups appropriately.
- Assists with assessment i.e. weight, height, searches, etc.
- Accurately administers medication to patients in accordance with hospital policy and physician order.
- Demonstrates interventions based on knowledge of psychiatric and medical nursing procedures, as well as the plan of care.
- Facilitates a therapeutic milieu by appropriate interaction with patients facilitating groups, structuring downtime and ensuring the proper level of patient supervision is maintained.
- Intervenes with suicidal gestures, inappropriate behaviors, elopements, etc., using proper CPI technique. Directs/redirects behaviors, demonstrating appropriate behavioral consequences.
- Documents unusual incidents concerning patients and communicates to RN.
- Maintains 15 minute documentation accurately.
- Communicates therapeutically with ages appropriately.
- Participates within the therapeutic milieu, setting appropriate limits.
- Properly implements restraint, seclusion and therapeutic hold based upon the age, size and clinical issues of the patient.
Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center is a Joint Commission approved and state licensed facility for 97 beds, which includes pediatric units, adolescent girls, adolescent boys, and MISA (Mental Illness Substance Abuse) unit. - Education: Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing required.
- Experience: One (1) year experience preferred as a licensed practical nurse in a psychiatric health care facility.
- Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed to practice by the Illinois State Board of Nursing. Successful completion of CPR certification, age-specific training and the current patient aggression management training, including appropriate use of Seclusion and Restraint, within 90 days of employment. Must pass a medication administration exam.
- Knowledge/Skills: Must possess knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing processes, therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting, crisis and behavior management, restraint and seclusion procedures and criteria and CPR training. Must be able to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from substance abuse and a variety of mental illnesses. Knowledge of DCFS mandated reporting requirements. Demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to varied populations including children, adolescents, and adults. Effective oral and written communication skills. Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines. Must be a self-starter and goal/results-oriented. Ability to use good judgment and to maintain confidentiality of information. Microsoft Office and computer skills. Strong customer service skills to external and internal customers. Ability to adhere to safety policies and code procedures react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to accept direction and adhere to policies and procedures. Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Ability to recommend/take corrective courses of action that would improve the functioning of the department’s systems.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Physical agility to manage patients with crisis prevention interventions. Push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds. Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping. Ability to use computer, printer, phone and office supplies. Typing/keying and mouse use. Ability to perform visual and auditory observation of patients. Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen. - Environmental Conditions: Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous waste. General hospital environment.
