Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a residential and acute program, for males and females ages 8-21, consist of a cognitive behavioral treatment model that encourages youth to safely explore thoughts and feelings related to the development of positive and desirable behavior within their homes and communities. Our programs have been designed to provide each individual resident quality mental health treatment in a safe therapeutic environment. It is the mission of Newport News Behavioral Health Center to promote recovery from the effects of abuse, addiction and other behavioral issues through specialized treatment interventions provided by a community of caring professionals.

Responsible as a member of the program team, observes and reports physical and behavioral symptoms under the supervision of the Program Coordinator as well as receiving direction from Teachers in the school setting. The Mental Health Technician (MHT) is an active participant in the implementation of physical care, therapeutic activities, and the academic program. Assist in planning and implementing treatment programs for residents, implements functional behavioral assessment/behavior intervention plans as well as individualized academic or behavioral goals, accommodations, and services as defined by Individualized Instructional Plans (IIPs), Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and 504 Plans.

Job Requirements

Must possess either a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field in Human Services from an accredited University or College; an Associate Degree in Psychology, Social Work or a related field in Human Services from an accredited University or College with a minimum of three (3) months of experience working with adolescents and children or providing direct care to residents; a High School diploma or a General Education Development Certificate (G.E.D.) with a minimum of six (6) months of experience working with adolescents and children or providing direct care to residents. Previous experience working with adolescents in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting is a plus. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Must be able to work either a 1st Shift (6:30am-3:00pm), 2nd shift (2:30pm-11:00pm) or 3rd shift (10:30pm - 7:00am) schedule.
