About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.  [SC00]

As part of the Real-Time Networks team, this position is accountable and responsible for the architecture, engineering, design, implementation, operation, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and ongoing reliability of complex Real-Time data networks used at FirstEnergy.  The position will focus on supporting Real-Time Networks which include but are not limited to the Energy Management System (EMS), Generation Management System (GMS), Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), Transmission Substation Networks, and encryption technologies used to support those networks.  This position is also responsible for regulatory compliance of Real-Time Network systems including Electronic Security Perimeters (ESPs), change control activities, configuration management, password changes, etc.  Data communications circuits are critical for Business Units to perform their functions and require 24-hour monitoring and support.  Real-Time networks are required to be extremely reliable and adhere to compliance standards.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintains strict adherence to FE safety programs and guidelines.
  • Delivers high-performance high-availability Real-Time Networks in a 24/7 enterprise, fully monitored environment to achieve service expectations, scalable to business needs, and have appropriate disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Participates in Real-Time Network projects to ensure computing and network architecture solutions are solid, well integrated, and comply with technical strategy.
  • Supports the operational performance and maintenance of existing Real-Time Networks as well as design and delivery of new product/feature enhancements.
  • Coordinates closely with FE Cyber Security, Transmission Security Technology & Engineering (TSTE), EMS/GMS Operations, and Distribution SCADA teams to ensure that FE policies and sound security practices are followed.
  • Coordinates with and receives support from the IT Networks group for transport and fiber services that are necessary to support Real-Time Networks.
  • Coordinates with Operating Companies, FEU/FET support groups, and external entities to accomplish objectives.
  • Ensures technical standards and regulatory requirements are followed in assigned work.
  • Maintains and executes work to assure on-scope, on-schedule, and on-budget performance.
  • Maintains functional knowledge of technology, technology changes, and emerging business requirements.
  • Diagnose and remediate root cause of device failures, alarms, and performance anomalies.
  • Perform regulatory compliance checks and evidence documentation as part of work activities.
  • Coordinate activities of field contractors supporting Network Service operations.
  • Available during non-standard hours when project schedules and maintenance issues dictate.
  • Supports the 24x7 on-call rotation process by functioning as primary call contact and providing engineering second level backup to help troubleshoot and repair system/hardware failures or performance degradation.
  • Understands and follows all applicable policies & procedures to effectively manage risk to the Bulk Electric System

An employee hired at the Specialists II or III level will be expected to perform all the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner.  Further, the Specialist II or III level employee will be assigned additional responsibilities related to those listed above.

Qualifications at the Level I include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Networking, Information Systems, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience in a network engineering field. 
    • Related experience in a network engineering field may include, but is not limited to engineering, maintenance, and operations of routing & switching, optical transport, microwave, or wireless radio communications equipment.
  • Knowledge of the OSI reference model, network routing and switching (e.g. Cisco, Nokia), and network management applications (e.g. Network Automation, Netscout).
  • Knowledge of interior and exterior routing protocols (e.g. EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, etc).
  • Knowledge of IPv4 addressing and subnetting
  • Core competencies include interpersonal, communications (written & verbal), presentation, project management, and drafting/drawing (Visio/CAD) skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following technical areas is preferred:
    • Providing data network platform administration
    • Encryption technologies and protocols (e.g. Group Encrypted Transport VPN)
    • Software Defined - WAN technologies
    • Regulatory compliance requirements impacting Real-Time Systems and Networks
    • Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) technologies.
    • EMS, GMS, DMS, SCADA communications, and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
    • Network management and other tools used to monitor the performance of these systems and manage the work
    • Industry recognized network certifications (e.g. Cisco CCNA or CCNP)
    • Environmental support systems (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.)

Qualifications at the Level II include all of the above, plus minimum of 2-4 years professional-level experience required.

Qualifications at the Level III include all of the above, plus minimum of 4-7 years professional-level experience required.
