Basic Purpose

Navy Federal Financial Group (NFFG) is looking for an accountant level 2 to support the accounting functions of NFFG and its subsidiaries. The ideal candidate should have a broker dealer and/or financial services accounting background.  NFFG itself is a wholly owned subsidiary of Navy Federal Credit Union, a licensed insurance agency, and through its subsidiaries, is a registered securities broker-dealer and investment advisory firm.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

1.  Performs accounting activities to include review and validate revenue data from third parties to ensure accuracy and completeness;  executes various expense calculations; prepares, examines, or analyzes financial data and accounting records to assess accuracy, and for compliance with procedural standards, industry and federal regulations.
•    Maintains financial statements, general ledger and associated accounts by reviewing and analyzing accounting activities
•    Performs monthly close activities to include reviewing and monitoring entries to the Trial Balance, Balance Sheet, and Income Statement accounts and posting of adjustments
•    Performs account reconciliation, analytics and variance analysis, and provides sufficient supporting documentation 
•    Applies broad knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Accounting Standard Codification (ASC) to the preparation of NFFG and its subsidiaries financial statements
•    Produces various complex financial and operational reports, including SEC mandated periodic Financial and Operational Combined Uniform Single (FOCUS) reports, ensures compliance with SEC/FINRA regulatory requirements
•    Identifies simplifying assumptions and accounting methods, and instances of incorrect application of GAAP/ASC; quantifies the impact of such treatment and recommends solution
•    Leads and guides Accounting Technicians with proper classification of transactions and funds, and the resolution of misapplied funds or outstanding items

2. Conducts in-depth analysis to identify, isolate and resolve discrepancies, and contributes to quality control and process improvement. 
•    Investigates, resolves and /or escalates complex discrepancies, data entry errors, and out of balance situations; prepares and presents recommendations for immediate action or proposals for policy changes to prevent losses
•    Serves as point of contact for inquiries and problem resolution in collaboration with all levels of management and staff across the organization 
•    Performs research to assist with responses to inquiries from internal and external auditors
•    Performs variance analysis and generates reports including associated justification
•    Identifies opportunities for process improvement  and presents recommendations for implementation

3. Participates in process and automated improvement initiatives. 
•    Participates on project teams and assists with the development and integration testing for new or enhanced automated financial accounting systems  
•    Keeps abreast of emerging accounting policies or updates and assists with the maintenance of the Accounting Policy Manual
•    Evaluates impact of amended regulations; recommends and implements methods to ensure compliance with SEC/FINRA
•    Executes financial and operational controls as designed and according to the control descriptions
•    Ensures compliance with internal documentation requirements by maintaining desktop procedures and/or checklists
•    Applies a thorough understanding of and experience with financial accounting and management, including techniques used in analyzing and reporting financial information
•    Identifies gaps in financial controls, develops and presents recommendations for alternative/ corrective action
•    Leads small projects or supports project groups across departmental lines by applying  accounting knowledge to development or enhancement initiatives for new systems and automated processes 
•    Maintains relationships with external contacts and all levels of management and staff;  acts as resource for the resolution of complex problems

QUALIFICATIONS -- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

•    Bachelor’s degree in a related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
•    Prior experience in an accounting role demonstrating an in-depth knowledge and understanding of accounting functions and transactions, reconciliation techniques and technical accounting information
•    Strong knowledge of GAAP and general working experience with technical accounting memos
•    Demonstrated ability to work independently and to coach, train and guide teammates in the application of GAAP and accounting rules
•    Experience working with cross-functional teams and the ability to lead small projects or portions of projects
•    Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with both internal and external contacts and to respond to requests regarding complex financial information/data
•    Excellent analytical, organizational and decision making skills
•    Proficient with Microsoft Excel
•    FINRA Series 99 to be obtained within 120 day, FINRA Series 7 to be Obtained within the first 12 month

DESIRED:
•    Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, or other related field
•    Previous experience with broker dealer firms and FINRA/SEC regulations
•    Prior knowledge and experience with QuickBooks accounting system
•    FINRA Series 99 license
•    CPA certification preferred

Hours:
Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-4:30PM
