Director, Community Leadership

The Director, Community Leadership works closely with the President and CEO, EVP Community Leadership and other senior leaders to ensure the National Board of Directors and chapter Boards of Trustees can effectively perform their duties.

This position is responsible for developing and providing the framework for effective National Board meetings by planning and managing a timeline, leading agenda development, developing meeting materials from multiple sources. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for creating a comprehensive meeting guide and other presentation materials as needed for the board chair and CEO. The Director, Community Leadership will be the lead on taking accurate, detailed meeting minutes and summaries as well as creating and distributing meeting summaries and follow up surveys to meeting participants. The position ensures that the Society follows its by-laws and Governance Policies.

The incumbent must be a strong partner in working with senior leadership for effective committee management as well, including all the standing National Board committees and the Community Leadership Committee, Delegate Assembly and volunteer leadership meetings.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

1. Create and develop the resources and provide the processes necessary for the National Board of Directors to fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities and engage to their highest potential - 30%

  • Provide timely year-round communications to directors and trustees in order keep them informed on key Society initiatives, issues, and action needed.
  • Provide staff leadership for the National Board nomination process.
  • Provide staff leadership for the National Board orientation process to enable new members to integrate quickly and effectively to the board culture, responsibilities and processes.
  • Oversee and implement key board governance processes consistent with the Society by-laws and Governance Policies.

2. Ensure effective National Board meetings including standing committee meetings - 35%

  • Proactively drive the timeline for agenda development and other meeting planning. Engage senior leadership as needed.
  • Draft, compile and distribute timely information and material for National Board meetings (agendas, material, surveys, talking points, minutes); ensure consistency across committee material and post on the board portal (audit, community leadership, finance, governance, internal audit, investment, nominating). Ensure accuracy of all final materials and information.
  • Attend in person and virtual National Board and committee meetings and manage logistical oversight in collaboration with hotel or venue staff.
  • Develop a comprehensive meeting guide and accompanying presentation materials (slides, handouts etc for Chair and President & CEO.
  • Assist in the coordination of the Delegate Assembly meeting.

3. Support the implementation of consistent governance practices throughout the Society - 10%

  • Support the development and implementation of consistent board meeting processes throughout the organization including notices, minutes, agendas, nominations, and orientation.
  • Work with the Community Leadership team to ensure there is a through line of information and discussions from National Board meetings to Board of Trustee meetings.
  • Coordinate year-round schedule of NBOD meetings, committee meetings, and volunteer leadership meetings.

4. Oversee the effective use of the Board Portal - 15%

  • Ensure all leadership volunteers receive training and prompting as needed
  • Create and maintain accurate and updated directors, trustees and advisory committee group lists.

5. Engagement and orientation for Directors and trustees is coordinated and supported - 10%

  • Support the CEO in the annual director engagement process
  • Coordinate quarterly trustee governance and chapter chair calls
  • Support the Volunteer Leadership Meetings logistics and communication

Minimum Education/Exprerience:
Bachelor's Degree preferred; 10 years of direct expreince will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Six years of experience 
  • Knowledge of nonprofit management and governence preferred
  • Effectively develop purposeful relationships and be skilled at interacting with senior, executive and volunteer leadership.
  • Must be self motivated with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and manage a year-round cadence of activities and processes.
  • Detail orientation with excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be able to handle multiple, diverse projects at a time.
  • Capability to understand board governance and board committee processes.
