Company Overview

Grainger is a broad line, business-to-business distributor of maintenance, repair and operating (MRO) supplies and other related products and services. More than 3.2 million businesses and institutions worldwide rely on Grainger for products such as safety gloves, ladders, motors and janitorial supplies, along with services like inventory management and technical support. These customers represent a broad collection of industries including commercial, government, healthcare and manufacturing. They place orders online, on mobile devices, through sales representatives, over the phone and at local branches. Approximately 5,000 suppliers provide Grainger with more than 1.6 million products stocked in Grainger’s distribution centers and branches worldwide.

Primary Function

Senior Financial Analysts (SFAs) play a meaningful role in supporting Grainger’s strategy by working cross-functionally to support initiatives that add business value and drive bottom line growth. They deliver high quality business insights that tell the story behind the financials and business operations. SFAs are expected to bring a unique and diverse perspective to the table and contribute to a culture of respect and inclusion.

Main duties include but are not limited to:

  • Drive continuous improvement by automating, refining, and implementing processes, tools, and deliverables both within Finance and supporting business functions.
  • Develop complex modeling solutions, analysis and reporting to support strategic initiatives
  • Guide functional business partners to ensure sound financial decisions. Responsible for applicable financial metrics that impact Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow performance.
  • Dive deep and understand the upstream and downstream effects of business decisions
  • Using a controllership mindset in creating clear and transparent financial analysis on the health of the business; understanding end-to-end process, standard work and controls
  • Assess risks and opportunities and identify key operational and financial issues to be addressed. Provide recommendations and influence business decisions, which include presentations to senior management.
  • Assist in preparation of annual budget, quarterly and long-range forecasts.
  • Review monthly results and provide insights to aligned business partners

Preferred skills and qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business or an MBA
  • 3+ years of experience in problem solving, which may include any forms of analysis beyond corporate financial analysis. Examples include but are not limited to: financial modeling, profitability analysis, Discounted Cash Flow/NPV, financial statement analysis, investment/ratio analysis, statistical or predictive analytics, data mining, risk identification, business valuation, etc.
  • Intellectual curiosity and drive to learn about different areas of the business, as well as a desire to strengthen financial acumen through diverse experiences and opportunities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to understand the details and effectively story-tell to Senior Management
  • Solid analytical experience working with high volumes of data
  • Effective cross-functional collaboration with business partners and the entire Finance team (FP&A, Controllership, Internal Audit, etc.)
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships and influence decision making
  • Agility and flexibility to operate in a dynamic and fast-paced organization
  • Outstanding work ethic, team-oriented and customer-focused
  • Strong financial acumen and experience in relevant financial analysis, modeling and analytics
  • Advanced Excel skills. Knowledge of SAP and Teradata preferred.

Our partnerships have a high impact on the organization and our ability to drive profitable growth. Examples of analyses and insights vary depending on the function supported, but include:

  • Conducting customer profitability analyses, helping our partners negotiate and manage customer contracts that deliver value for Grainger and the customer
  • Analyzing pricing programs and their expected impact to the business, ensuring the company’s ability to maintain market relevance
  • Creating automated and interactive dashboards using Tableau, understanding flow of source data and leveraging effective visual management to help business leaders make proactive decisions
  • Guiding our merchandising and supplier management teams in optimizing product assortment to improve overall profitability, including providing insights during cost negotiations and analyzing impact of volume shift and  consolidation
  • Analyzing Return on Investment for demand-generating programs, providing recommendations on spend allocations
  • Diving into drivers of changes in freight costs, including analyzing shifts in modes of transportation, fuel costs, inbound and outbound freight mix
  • Acting as a line of defense to minimize excess and obsolete inventory, including assessing the impact of discounting or inventory clearance programs
  • Building a comprehensive model highlighting growth and trends related to order origination and fulfillment channel volume shifts
  • Developing total cost of ownership analyses using Discounted Cash Flows or other complex models – e.g., a new national distribution center, new enterprise software or infrastructural upgrade, consolidation or relocation or corporate facilities, inventory purchase program, etc.
  • Analyzing incremental lift related to new programs – e.g., incremental web searches due to new website functionality, revenue and profitability lift as a result of sales coverage pilots, etc.
  • Assisting with analyses over feasibility and potential synergies related to acquisitions; serve as liaison overseeing financial aspects of business integration
  • Identifying and estimating the Earnings per Share impact of plan/forecast risks and opportunities, reviewing any potential impact to external guidance
