Position: CGS Apprentice/ Rail Car

Location: Salisbury, MD

Responsible for exhibiting Chesapeake Utilities Corporation’s Mission, Vision and Values, regarding external customers, agencies, vendors, internal departments and co-workers. This role assists in the support of the business unit’s organizational planning efforts, with a focus on strategic planning, business development opportunities, overall business unit reporting measures, and project review committees for strategic projects within the business unit. This position will assist the Manager of Financial Administration with complex strategic and organizational planning efforts while assisting in the development of the annual strategic plan, analytics for various levels of Sharp Energy Leadership & Management and other significant projects within the business unit.  This position will also be responsible for various business unit reporting and administrative functions.



  • Assist in the construction and maintenance of Community Gas System propane gas storage and distribution facilities
  • Assist in the construction and maintenance of Community Gas System regulator stations and related equipment
  • Assist in the construction and maintenance of the Company’s propane gas bulk storage facilities
  • Must be willing to work on job sites that involve travel and temporary lodging
  • Operate assigned truck and equipment safely
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of vehicle and equipment
  • Ensure assigned vehicles are mechanically maintained and that they are kept clean to present a good company image
  • Prepare and maintain all appropriate documentation required of drivers by the Department of Transportation
  • Observe all traffic rules and practice defensive driving techniques


  • Be cooperative with management and co-workers
  • Participate in Company functions
  • Participate in training seminars
  • Participate in Company and industry activities which serve to improve personal job knowledge and performance


  • Must possess and maintain at a minimum valid Class “B” Commercial Drivers License with Hazardous Materials endorsement
  • Must be willing to start work in the early hours of the morning in order to get the rail cars empty and released in a timely manner.
  • Perform duties in a manner which supports the Company and Business Unit vision and mission
  • Perform work activities in a manner that ensures compliance with Company safety rules, regulations and procedures
  • Responsible for certain communication equipment
  • Responsible for the safety of personnel, customer and the general public as it relates to operations within position’s scope
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


  • Working knowledge of the characteristics of propane gas
  • Working knowledge of propane installations and equipment
  • Working knowledge of and ability to safely operate company vehicles and equipment
  • Working knowledge of the policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to the Company and the propane gas industry



  • Tasks are physically strenuous requiring good overall health
  • Normal level of visual and hearing acuity
  • Considerable stooping, bending, pulling and crouching
  • Must be able to lift seventy-five (75) pounds on a consistent basis
  • Must be able to work in heights of 15 feet above grade.
  • Considerable ability to communicate both in speaking and writing
  • Ability to analyze data and make decisions


  • Exposure to flammable products such as propane gas and methanol


  • Primarily field surroundings in all types of weather conditions
  • Company uniforms are required including wearing various forms of protective equipment to include steel toed shoes, headgear, safety glasses and various other items.
