* Ensure a safe workplace environment without risk to health;
* Lead and coordinate the overall implementation of legislatively and regulatory compliant Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) programs throughout the facility;
* Develop and conduct regular HSE program assessments to determine Corporate, Business Unit or Departmental deviations from the established HSE programs or deficiencies in approach to the same, recommending improvement strategies and solutions to the appropriate Leadership Team Members;
* Provide professional knowledge and expertise in the development, compilation, administration, communication and support of all HSE policies, initiatives, programs, procedures, processes and practices, ensuring that all documentation is reviewed and approved by the Senior Leadership on at least an annual basis or sooner as necessitated by regulatory or process changes;
* Keep up to date with all aspects of relevant health, safety & welfare at work legislation and communicate relevant changes to the business;
* Assist in the planning, implementation, monitoring and review of the protective and preventative strategies and measures follow to minimize risks, operational losses, occupational health problems, environmental incidents, accidents and injuries;
* Conduct regular and thorough site inspections, hazard and risk assessments to identify and reduce apparent, perceived and potential hazards, risks or liability occurrences and, through the analysis of the same, prioritize, develop, recommend and assist in the implementation of monitored and effective engineering, administrative and / or personal protective controls, measures, programs or processes;
* Provide expert advice, direction and recommendation to the Senior Leadership Team, other Leaders and Team Members with respect to HSE matters;
* As directed by the Senior Leadership, professionally represent the Corporation and otherwise interface with and protect Valiant's interests regarding external government and associated regulatory agencies, including, but not limited to: OSHA, MIOSHA, EPA, DEQ with respect inspections, audits or correspondence;
* Respond to regulatory requests or audit findings in a timely manner and in a thorough format, addressing all open issues to the satisfaction of the requesting agency and to Valiant standards and expectations;
* Develop, lead, facilitate and verify, through monitoring and competency testing on a regular basis, legislative, regulatory and Corporate HSE policies and procedures;
* Maintain a current copy of Certificate of Liability Insurance of all Third Party Service Provider (Sub-contract Agency) and the "Acknowledgement" documentation of HSE requirements outlined in the "Third Party Service Provider Guidebook";
* Provide or arrange task or function specific training, communication, competency measurement, effectiveness assessment, acknowledgement of success and follow-up "refresher" training as required by statute, regulation or due diligence practice;
* Conduct HSE orientation for new Team Members and verify, through endorsed documentation as provided by the Third Party Service Provider (Sub-contract Agency), their completion of the same Valiant-approved orientation prior to the placement of their representatives at a Valiant site. Orientation packages must be site-specific and meet current industry standards and laws;
* Distribute monthly Safety Talks held by Supervisors within their respective areas and document dates, timing, attendees etc., and any tasks or opinion issues to be reviewed or completed. All supervisors are required to hold periodic safety talks at a pre-determined frequency. Report any non-consistency to your immediate Management;
* Lead the ERT activities including, but not limited to, organizing and facilitating the election of committee members, preparing meeting agenda, recording meeting minutes and posting the same as prescribed, chairing monthly JHSEC meetings and maintaining open issues matrices for corrective action and issue resolution;
* Receive accident and related incident reports and, in conjunction with the Business Unit Leadership and the applicable ERT, investigate and recommend any necessary changes or process improvements to prevent a recurrence of the accident or incident and ensures that Valiant complies with HSE regulations and best practices;
* Complete and review, within prescribed time limitations, all required OSHA, MIOSHA and DEQ reporting, including but not limited to OSHA 300 series reports and logs, responses to OSHA orders and general correspondence to the same;
* Responsible for Workers Compensation claims monitoring and administration, report generation, and communication;
* Emergency Response Planning and documentation;
* Effectively and proactively manage, through an open dialogue with Workers Compensation and a best practices early and safe "Return-to-Work" program, all claims to the Corporation's favor with particular emphasis on "lost time claims" and related open issues;
* Maintain all HSE records and documents, including injury and incident statistics and measures, OSHA 300, 300A and 301 logs, training activity and reports to ensure a complete compliance to mandated record keeping requirements and due diligence considerations;
* Provide on a regular and scheduled basis, to the Senior Leadership and the Business Unit Leadership, complete and accurate statistical and cost data trend charts and measurable, relative to injury frequency and severity, actual and "near miss" incidents, HSE compliance, issues, concerns, training and awareness, external service provider and consultative costs and determine trends and needs;
* Develop, review, improve and maintain the Environmental Management System (EMS) requirements in accordance with corporate and government regulations and the ISO14001 standard;
* Verify, in conjunction with the ERT and the Leadership, the compliance the facilities operations, systems and materials with applicable environmental legislation, regulations and requirements and report any findings, including non-conforming conditions, to the Senior Leadership;
* Develop and maintain compliant EMS procedures, work instructions and any other related documents and processes;
* Assist in developing & maintaining a comprehensive recycling and waste reduction program consistent with corporate practice, policy and work instructions;
* Monitor the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) database service ensuring the completeness and the status of all listed data sheets;
* Review Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and approve the use of all new regulated products related to HSE prior to purchase by and use in the Corporation;
* Identify the significant environmental aspects of the Company's facilities, including waste streams and disposal methods, and evaluate the same to ensure legislative and regulatory compliance and to recommend and implement any improvements, where possible;
* Verify compliance to the terms and the conditions of Certificates of Approval or special environmental permits required for any equipment, buildings, etc. met and report any non-conforming to the Senior Leadership;
* Identify and address the environmental training requirements needs as applicable in the circumstance and as appropriate at the company, business unit, department or Team Member level;
* Maintain records of all external (customer and community) communications regarding environmental matters;
* Perform internal audits to ensure the effectiveness of the EMS and report findings to the Senior Leadership;
* Support the Leadership Review process through the provision of environmental reporting;
* Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Leadership. Management reserves the right to change duties or reassign duties at any time.


* A Bachelor's degree in safety management or a related field in combination with a minimum equivalent of five (5) years' experience in progressively responsible health, safety and environmental position;
* Certified Safety Professional (CSP) (U.S.) designation is preferred;
* Industrial Hygiene and/or ergonomic experience would be an asset;
* An effective experience managing Workers Compensation claims and reducing liability costs through a "Return-to-Work" (RTW) program and other risk limiting strategies and methods;
* An extensive knowledge of and ability to interpret legislative and regulatory statutes, policies and mandates relative to workplace HSE and the impact of the same upon the Corporation and its Team Members;
* A proven competency and proficiency with respect to HSE statistical measurement methodology, analysis and interpretative action plan creation;
* An ability to carry out multiple assigned tasks and projects to their completion with minimal supervision;
* A superior verbal and written interpersonal communication ability facilitating a professional and an effective working relationship with Team Members and others within the position accountability;
* A proven leadership ability coupled with excellent problem solving skills; and
* The ability to work with others in a team atmosphere.
