Digital Control Systems Engineer

The Digital Control Systems Engineer is a key role for Thalia Waste Management. The job holder will work across our sites to support and enable the site and central engineering teams to manage, maintain and develop the control systems that drive our sorting and treatment technologies. This will involve close collaboration with engineering and maintenance teams to identify and act on opportunities and issues with our systems, ensuring they are secure, effective and compliant, and lead development projects when needed.
The role is to be home-based and will require travel to our sites as well as potentially to supplier or other locations. As the work requires, there may be periods of time where evening or weekend work is needed to support delivery or outage work.
Responsibilities
- Own and lead the development of the lifecycle plans for the control systems across Thalia sites, built collaboratively with site teams, Thalia engineering, and 3rd parties to ensure that our control systems are secure, resilient, and effective.
- Develop an effective knowledge of day-to-day operations and support site teams through coaching and influencing, as well as working with them on issues and problems.
- Lead the change and assurance process for control systems, working with site teams and suppliers to develop controls, monitor processes, and provide assurance on compliance.
- Support and develop the skills and capabilities of the site teams in their work through sharing of experience and best practices.
- Support the resolution of operational and systematic issues by the site teams.
- Ensure the network of suppliers supporting the control systems is in place and working to agreed standards.
- Lead and support as needed on improvement and development plans for control systems, being hands-on as required to help shape a solution but with the end goal of successful transfer to site operations.
The Person
- Degree in Systems/Controls/Electronics/Electrical/Computing engineering or similar experience gained in a field or operational setting.
- Additional qualifications and/or demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal development.
- Operating experience of continuous process plants, ideally in the waste treatment or similar sectors as a senior or principal engineer.
- Management and control of change on control systems.
- Design and delivery of Industrial Control and Monitoring Systems including programming, ideally on one or more of Siemens, ABB, OMROM, Emerson, Allen Bradley or Enevea technologies, including the use of historian/logging systems.
- Leading small teams, including 3rd parties on delivery and improvement projects.
- Influencing and working with more senior staff to agree improvements and changes.
- Understanding of risk management and safe systems of work in plant environments.
- Practical understanding of process sequencing and control systems development, operation, and delivery.
