Director of Beach Experience

Primary Responsibilities: Responsible for the safety and services offered to our guests, MK Club members and resident owners & their guests at Kauna'oa Bay
Responsible for the order and cleanliness of the beach, furniture, equipment, and all surrounding areas (beach lawn, discovery center and beach shacks) and leading team members to carry out all job duties pertaining to their job description
Supervise and direct department staff and ensure that they are properly trained in safety/rescue procedures, emergency response, and the hotel's Ocean Awareness Program
Coordinate and execute all beach activities that are unique to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel to include water activities, adventures, and group activities, as well as beach shack retail program and offerings
Assist in areas of the department as determined and/or directed by the Hotel Manager to include scheduling, payroll, forecasting, supply ordering, training, coaching, counseling, IBUs, etc


Essential Duties:
  1. Maintain visibility in the operation, engage with guests and members, provide recognition, and promote good public relations
    Able to handle concerns and complaints including special requests for guests, club members, residential guests, and group contacts
  2. Enforce department policies, standard operating procedures, and hotel safety rules
  3. Conduct pre-shift briefings and inform our team members on current hotel events as well as outside events to keep them updated
  4. Train, evaluate, lead, motivate, coach, and discipline all team members in the department to ensure that established cultural and core standards are met

  5. Establish and enforce the hotel's Ocean Awareness Program
  6. Maintain and service Mauna Kea's fleet of outrigger canoes and water equipment.
  7. Maintain a proper supply of towels, equipment, furniture, supplies, uniforms, etc
    needed for the beach, games room and water activities; and ensure all equipment and supplies in inventory are in a condition representative of the Mauna Kea brand.
  8. Preparing the annual operating and CIP budget for the department
  9. Manage daily operations of the beach and collaborate with Director of Culture and Activities Manager on resort offerings for guests, members and keiki club participants to enjoy
  10. Develop and recommend new recreational activities for guests and members to remain current and competitive
  11. Establish an ongoing rapport with new and existing members and assist in developing the membership benefits
    Create, organize, and host member events and programs such as weekly canoe club paddles and swims.
  12. Ensure quality of all amenities and service touch points, as well as restock and organize all products and equipment to ensure an attentive and distinctive experience at the beach and games center.
  13. Develop and implement sales and marketing strategies to promote daybed rentals, Outrigger Experiences, and beach retail to maximize profit
  14. Be current on developments in the world of beach and ocean activities and present the resort as a leader in positive innovation
    Implement new activities, innovative menu options and create an unsurpassed luxury resort beach experience.
  15. Review beach merchandise sales and inventory with retail buyers and make recommendations
  16. Inspect beach, beach lawn, games center and surrounding areas for safety hazards and faulty equipment and report corrections and recommend improvements
  17. Conduct daily coaching and walkthroughs to ensure our team members are delivering elevated levels of guest service
  18. Perform other related duties as assigned or required by the Hotel Manager

Other Duties:
  1. Maintain and continually improve preservation and sustainability efforts of Kauna'oa Bay
    Ensure regular beach grooming schedule exists and is adhered to.
  2. Work with the landscaping managers on necessary beautification projects
  3. Relieve attendants and hosts as needed
  4. Conduct regular department meetings
  5. Attending resort management meetings
  6. Assist with closing end of day duties and always assist in daily operations throughout the day, with emphasis during "crunch" time and high business levels
  7. Act as liaison between beach department and hotel departments, third party beach vendors, and residential services
  8. Ability to manage and drive complex stakeholder completion in a timely manner with competing priorities and different stake holder objectives
  9. Book group beach days, activities, and regattas to increase revenue and promote the beach
  10. Develop and strengthen community relations such as YMCA, Parker Elementary, Hilo Animal shelter.
  11. Support the Pool, Keiki Club, Fitness and Activity team members in the absence of a manager.

Working Conditions and Work Hours:
  1. Work outdoors in the sun and various weather and ocean conditions supervising the beach, beach lawn and activities in other areas of the hotel property
  2. Works in normal office conditions performing administrative functions
  1. Work shifts and days determined by the Hotel Manager
  1. Must be able to work irregular hours
  2. Must be able to work at least 50 hours per week and necessary days per week based on business levels

Equipment Use:
  1. Proficient in the use of a computer and with the resort's word, excel or other required software
  2. Ability to use the telephone and radio
  3. Ability to use various office equipment including but not limited to calculators, photocopiers, and facsimile machines
  4. Automated External Defibrillator, Jet Ski, SUP, sailing canoe, outrigger canoe, surfboard, utility cart, ATV or other rescue and beach equipment

Mental and Physical Demands:
  1. Ability to prioritize and organize workload to ensure deadlines are met
  2. Able to manage stressful and challenging situations
  3. Able to stand and walk during most shifts
  4. Able to sit at a desk to complete administrative duties
  5. Lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds to service guests with chairs, umbrellas, and supplies
  6. Capable of assisting in water saves/emergency situations, water activities, etc

Communication Demands:
  1. Must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing to employees, department manager and guests/members; inclusive of communicating ocean awareness conditions
  2. Effectively communicate in emergencies to appropriate resort employees and rescue personnel over the phone, radio or in person
  3. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing to employees, managers, guests, and vendors
  4. Must be able to give tours and talk to groups of people

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
  1. First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
  2. Health Department TB clearance
  3. Two years work-related experience in leadership capacity preferred
  4. Skills to effectively lead and supervise the department and meet goals
  5. Must satisfactorily complete First Responder Certification training scheduled by the resort and meet recertification requirements as needed
  6. Ability to complete the USLA thousand-yard run and thousand-yard swim test preferred.
  7. Boater Education Course Certification preferred.
  8. Recreational Thrill Craft Operator Safety Education Course Certification preferred.
  9. Experience in Ocean Safety preferred.
  10. Must be creative, pleasant, smiling and friendly.
  11. Knowledgeable in Hawaiian culture preferred.
