LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER - SUMNER MIDDLE SCHOOL - RUS 24
Join Sumner Middle School, nestled in picturesque Sullivan, Maine. Set amidst the serene beauty, our brand-new learning campus is emerging just a short 15-minute drive east of Ellsworth, the county seat, and a scenic 40 miles from Bangor. Notably close to Bar Harbor and the stunning Acadia National Park, our Charles M. Sumner Learning Campus houses both Sumner Middle School and Sumner Memorial High School. The middle school has approximately 147 students spanning grades 6 through 8. Our focus at Charles M. Sumner Learning Campus revolves around empowering students to navigate diverse environments and make impactful contributions to their communities, fostering an environment that champions challenge within a safe and respectful setting.
We are seeking a team-oriented, energetic, and creative educator to teach English Language Arts at Sumner Middle School. Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold or be able to obtain a Maine Teacher Certification with a current MDOE Criminal History Records Check. Pay is based upon experience and level of education.
In addition to the above, we are seeking someone who will create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of their students; guide the student learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and individual student growth; follow and adhere to district approved curriculum; work in harmony with individual, school-based as well as district approved goals; establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects; assist the school administration in implementing all policies and rules; develop reasonable rules and expectations for classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order within the classroom in a fair and just manner; assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide feedback to help students grow and develop; evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports several times per school year; monitor students for possible educational disabilities, seeking assistance of school and district specialists as required; maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging ELA lessons that align with state standards and curriculum guidelines.
- Develop and implement differentiated instruction strategies to meet the diverse needs of all students.
- Utilize a variety of assessment methods to evaluate student progress and adjust instruction as needed.
- Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports the social and emotional growth of students.
- Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and parents to support student success and well-being.
- Integrate technology effectively into the classroom to enhance learning experiences.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in education and classroom management.
- Implement PBIS strategies to promote positive behavior and create a supportive school culture.
- Utilize the BARR program to build strong relationships with students and identify early warning signs for potential challenges.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, English Language Arts, or a related field.
- Valid teaching certification for middle school English Language Arts.
- Experience with PBIS and BARR is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to create engaging, student-centered lesson plans.
- Strong classroom management skills and a commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A passion for teaching and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of young learners.
