Communications Director

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Sr. Director of Communications requires initiative, creativity, attention to detail, as well as the willingness and ability to learn and adapt quickly. This position is responsible for developing, designing, then launching continuous communication strategies for a DOD client's core programming throughout its nationwide footprint as it elevates the client's brand and profile in the defense innovation ecosystem.
This individual must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an eye for design and a highly developed aptitude for storytelling as they will contribute to strategic operations and organizational objectives.
The Sr. Director of Communications will manage a five-person communications team that is responsible for managing all internal, programmatic (operational) and strategic communications work including its website, social media, newsletters, press releases, and media requests. Overtime, the team is expected to grow and during the growth phase of the Communications office, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing these tasks, and shaping current and future workflows and workloads.
As the client's mission and lines of effort require engagement with academia, the early-stage venture, and defense communities, the Sr. Director of Communications must be able to effectively communicate with all three of those communities and be able to craft the message around the client's core mission and operations that will help engage those groups with the network.
Some travel will be required to support the client's programming and personnel throughout the network. This client has a story to tell about the communities of problem solvers across the country who are stepping up to help change the way the DoD solves problems, and we need your help to tell it!
Key characteristics of a successful candidate:
* A working knowledge of the venture, academic, and defense ecosystems.
* The ability and interest to maintain awareness of new media technology, techniques, and strategies such as social networks, and integrate them into communication plans.
* A proven track record of setting up and driving marketing projects/programs within an organization.
* At least 10 years of relevant communications (experience in a management position for at least five of those years a plus).
* Experience identifying, pitching, and developing long term relationships with media and journalists, a track record of earned media is a plus.
* A sense of urgency while maintaining exceptional service attitude focusing on professionalism and responsibility.
* The ability to manage media relations and maximize media opportunities.
* Excellent writing skills and a strong understanding of SEO-driven content.
* Working knowledge of content management systems, HTML coding, and digital graphics production.
* An eagerness to serve as a strategic thought partner of the Managing Director, shaping the voice and messaging for the organization based on his/her vision.
* An innate need for teamwork, and the desire to support and highlight the great work being done across the organization.
* A desire to take complete ownership of the development and implementation of a communications strategy.
* A strong leadership track record; and the willingness and aptitude to operate successfully as part of a dispersed team. The Communications Director is based at the customer's HQ in Arlington, VA but will be required to support the customer's personnel throughout the country.

Qualifications:
Experience, Education, Skills and Abilities:
* Master's degree in business or related field of study - PhD a plus.
* 10+ years of experience in a related field.
* Knowledgeable of the appropriations and federal budget processing.
* Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills.
* Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
* Experience using multiple office and Comms production software platforms for a variety of tasks.
* Knowledge of file management, transcription, and other administrative procedures.
* Ability to work on tight deadlines.

Near visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; manual dexterity to operate a telephone and keyboard; lift horizontally and vertically.

Job is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse and multi-line telephone system. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Sr. Communications Director would manage about six personnel to include subcontractors.
Additional Qualifying Factors:
As a condition of employment, must pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results.
